Appointment with a gender therapist =\ -
February 8th 2010, 09:48 PM
Right...
For those of you who don't know, I'm transgendered, out to everyone in my family buy my dad. I'm pretty much a full-time cross-dresser tbh (even in school and all that), but not on hormones or anything. I have an appointment on the seventeenth of february this gender therapist to see whether I'm right to start hormones, and I'm just worried about what'd happen and how vital it is that I come out to my dad at this point ^^ Thanks for reading my somewhat convoluted and confusing post... xx |

@OP: Congratulations on finding a gender therapist! I hope the appointment goes well. Could you give us an update after and say how it went? I'm trying to find a gender therapist in my area right now, so I'd be really interested in how it goes.
From the research I've done, I think that you're going to have to come out to your Dad soon. Definitely before you get started on hormones. I don't know if its the same with your hormones, but I know that with T, the changes start getting noticeable within weeks. Also, coming out to your family is part of the process of transitioning, which I'm sure you know. Good luck and I hope it works out! @ Lola: I think the OP identifies as female. |

Hey there,
I think it is great that you have found a therapist. I think that is pretty awesome . Do you think you could talk to this therapist about your concerns about coming out to your father? In my opinion you shouldn't come out until you are ready, you know? But, I think coming out is a very important step to take. If you have told other people in your family maybe you could talk to them about coming out to your dad as well? See what they have to say about the whole situation. They might be able to give you some good advice based on what they know of your dad. Please hang in there and if you need anything feel free to pm me. Jenna There could never be amore beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguisesandhoops they make you jump through You were made tofill a purposethat only you could do So there could never be amore beautiful you -Johnny Diaz Everyday is so wonderful And suddenly it's hard to breathe Now and then I get insecure From all the pain, I feel so ashamed I am beautiful no matter what they say Words can't bring me down I am beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no So don't you bring me down today To all your friends you're delirious So consumed in all your doom Tryin' hard to fill the emptiness, the piece is gone Left the puzzle undone, ain't that the way it is? 'Cause you are beautiful no matter what they say Words can't bring you down, oh no You are beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no So don't you bring me down today -Christina Aguilera |

Hey :]
I think it's great that you have already come out to most of your family and I definitely think that the next stage is for you to talk to your Dad about this - but only talk to him when you feel ready to do so. I would think that if the therapist is accessing you to see if you are ready to start undertaking hormones then he/she will simply check that you are OK health wise, and also check that you are mentally prepared for the effects of the hormones. However, if you are to start taking hormones, then would I be right in thinking that your Dad may notice a physical difference in you? If so would it be better to come out to him before he notices? I'm sure everything will go fine, and feel free to re-post with any queries that you have. Take Care, Claire x How much pain has cracked your soul?
How much love would make you whole? You're my guiding lightning strike I can't find the words to say, They're overdue I'd travel half the world to say "I belong to you" I want to reconcile the violence in your heart I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask I want to exorcise the demons from your past I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix - My heart opens to your voice |

Thanks for your advice everyone (:
Now I just need to start wondering what sort of questions they're likely to ask me ^^ With regards to coming out to my dad, I know I have to some time soon, but it's not easy when he's as irrational as he is and is prone to inconsistency at the best of times... but it's something I'll need to do anyhow (although, since he's unobservant enough not to notice already, I'm not sure he'd notice if I actually started hormones...) Thaaaaaaaaanks again (': xx |

with regards to coming out to your dad, i know you've said that he hasn't noticed.. but are you sure about this?. because me may already have a pretty good idea that you're trans.. i think it would be good to tell him, but maybe hold off until you've at least had the first meeting with this therapist.. i'm sure they'll be able to give you some valuable advice as to how best to deal with your dad and any other issues you're facing. good luck with it!

I'm fairly sure he hasn't noticed... I mean, as far as I'm aware he's convinced I'm perfectly straight... he was giving me 'advice' about girls the other day...
Thank you (': x |

how'd your appointment go? check out this link for some good information on how to come out to your parents. it's also a good idea to have some educational materials present when you come out to your father.

Thanks for the link, I'll be checking that later!
As for the appointment, in all honesty it was rather dull, but thank you for asking (:. I can understand why she asked these questions, but it was just mostly about self-esteem, how long I've felt this way and who knows, which wasn't really what I was hoping to talk about (she steered the conversation). We've got another appointment together in three weeks where we're discussing future plans and things like that, hopefully that will put my mind at ease a little (: x |

that's great. i'm glad to hear it went well. did you get to mention that your father doesn't know that you're trans? i'm guessing she inquired about who you're out to.
