When homosexuality comes up in class - January 9th 2012, 05:19 PM

OK so today in my AS Philosophy and Ethics class we were doing natural law and homosexuality came up.

Everyone was saying it was fine (though I think some said it cause I was in the room) Then people were saying it was unatural etc. I got more and more angry then said in an angry, passionate but loud way " When I kiss a guy it feels unnatural, but when I kiss a girl it feel natural" " It annoys me when hetreosexuals say that it is unnatural, because you don't understand what it is like to feel attracted to the same sex, you are attracted to the opposite which is what is natural to you" " I get the Bible flung at me and told I am unnatural" " I hate it when the Bible is flung at me when I am a Christian I Know what it says" etc.

Miss spoke to me at the end, cause she didn't know that I was a lesbian till I came out with that.

Everyone was gossiping about it after the lesson as well.

Would you of said the same thing?

Should I of said something else or nothing at all?

What do you do/say when homosexuality comes up in your lessons?

Hey,

To be honest I think what you said seemed perfectly fine to me. When homosexuality comes up at school I'm more than happy to defend it when people say it's unnatural, but then again I don't have any specific religious beliefs that lead me to believe it's anything but okay. I don't see anything wrong with what you said, I mean, it wasn't offensive and I wouldn't have taken it as an aggressive response, so don't worry too much. As long as you're okay with people knowing your sexuality, which is absolutely fine, then it's okay. It's great that you're so open with it.

Hollie.

You did the right thing in standing up for, not only your own beliefs, but for everyone who is attracted to those of their own sex. I think you did more than you realise. Statistically, there's probably at least 1 other person in your class who is either homosexual or bisexual. When you stood up for your own beliefs when everyone else was criticising them, you stood up for their beliefs too and gave them a bit of hope and showed them that not everyone will judge them for their attraction.

I thought about you for the rest of the day.
Catching my head turning to find you again.
I hated myself for it.

Kudos to you for standing up for yourself! I wouldn't have been brave enough to do that.

I don't remember where I saw this--but the other day I found a graphic that said "Homosexuality was found in (some large number of) species. Homophobia was found in one. Which one is unnatural?" And that's the most AWESOME thing ever.

I remember in 2009, my senior year, we had a debate on homosexuality and a lot of people where throwing out bible sayings and how it's unnatural, I did not speak up (wasn't fully out) until another girl said, "gays are fucked in head." which I then stood up and said, "Well, I guess myself and about 5 other people in our grade, are fucked in the head." and sat down, it was dead silent for a few minutes, then all my friends stood up for me.

So, I applaud you full on. Never be silent with who you are. Be proud. xx

Good for you for standing up for yourself I took a class my senior year called "History of the American Family" and we had a "sex, puberty, and sexuality" unit, in which I actually got into a very... "heated discussion" with some fellow classmates for saying things like people have said to you. Good job, and keep fightin for us <4-1

“I cannot prevent anyone from getting angry, or mad, or frustrated. I can only hope that they’ll turn that anger and frustration and madness into something positive, so that two, three, four, five hundred will step forward, so the gay doctors will come out, the gay lawyers, the gay judges, gay bankers, gay architects … I hope that every professional gay will say ‘enough’, come forward and tell everybody, wear a sign, let the world know. Maybe that will help.” Harvey Milk, 1978

What you did was really brave, and if I was there, I would have supported you. When homosexuality comes up in my lessons and someone says something negative about it, I just explain to them that this is how we were born and most people in the class end up on my side of the argument anyway.

I'm bisexual by the way.
