Red face Ok, now for my voice - February 22nd 2012, 07:00 PM

So, I am going to come out within the month. After that I'm keeping myself shaven, wearing makeup, etc, but the problem is my voice. I wouldn't say I have a really deep voice, but its obviously male. The hormones will help with that, but I wont be taking those for a while. I don't want to forcefully change it constantly because that would be not only straining, but would also make it seem like I'm trying too hard. I don't know how many other options I have. Any suggestions? ^~^

For me it's the opposite but I've started by training myself with music I started training with alto to deepen my voice while I sang and now when I feel I want to pass it's easier to switch to a more masculine voice. At least, it worked for me :3 But a suggestion. Get used to singing at a feminine level and after a while you might be able to switch back and forth between male and female voices.

Hey Kaitlyn,

First off, I'm sorry that I can't be of more help! I'm not transgender myself, and so I don't have too much insight into this kind of thing. However, I did do a little search and came up with this. Have you ever heard of "voice therapy?" It is something that many MtFs undergo to make their voice sound more feminine without the use of hormones or surgery. In fact, it says that some of the techniques are similar to those used for vocal training, so Roy's suggestion sounds right on the ball!

This also appears to be a free resource (although I haven't fully looked through it) designed to help pre-op MtFs develop their voice.

I hope this helps at least a little bit! Again, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help!!

Take care!
