How is this a compliment - August 3rd 2011, 02:57 AM

So at work I was talking to this group of friends who visited my park (not my friends). And we were talking about guessing ages so I said one girl was probably 18 and she said I was right and she asked me if I was 19 and I said no and laughed but in a pecimistic way, she told me that I should take it as a compliment? Is that supposed to mean like im mature for my age or something

Usually when you are young you're supposed to want to pass for older, so this girl thought you (a 16-year-old) would be flattered by being guessed at 19. That's my take anyway.

I guess she said that mainly because of the way you answered. You said that you were only 16 "in a pecimistic way". That's why she thought you'd like to be older and she imagined you would take it as a compliment that you actually look older.

On the other hand, at this age it is usually considered a compliment when someone thinks you look older than you actually are. At a later stage (after 20) it is considered necessary to look younger than you actually are. It's all a lot of bullsh*t, of course, but that's the way of the world right now
