My gf was on the pill for a long time and it was successful although she had to try several kinds to find one with the least side effects. She has an IUD now and that's lot's better since there are no chemicals involved to alter mood, etc., but you still may have to try a couple or three to find the one that's most comfortable for you.

I've always preferred non-barrier types since there's a more natural feeling and you don't have the mess or fumbling around to deal with, but you and your partner have to stick with each other and not fuck around as there is no protection from STDs.
