It has recently been reported in the news that vulnerabilities in Java may lead to a person's computer becoming compromised. A number of software producers have taken steps to minimise this. For instance Firefox have set up a 'click to play' function that stops Java from running unless you explicitly say you want it to. This is what you're seeing at the moment. Whether you choose to continue using Java is a personal choice down to you.
