This not only destroyed me, it also (ironically) hardened my heart. They claimed I lacked empathy and while it's not true, I definitely don't have the patience I used to. If I can be treated like that by them, I can be harsher with people than I am because if they can pretend to care, I can really care with tough love. I get it, but the world operates on the "no excuses" rule so sometimes you have to push through because they don't care about you.
