First poem in a really long time.

You locked me into a wrought iron cage
and you held a lit match to my wings
You doused me in years worth of rage
then laughed when I couldn't sing
You launched the key far into the lake
and you plucked every one of my feathers
Made me think my body was yours to take
then you tightened your grip on my tethers
You yelled at me from the top of your lungs
enough for you to spit right in my face
You've always said I'm so high strung
Made me feel like I'm all out of place
You choked me until I couldn't breathe
watched the air drain from my soul
All so you could make yourself believe
that you stole all of my control
With a blue face, I gasped for some air
I started dry heaving and crying
You told me about how you'd never care
and all I could think about was dying
Except I know you'd never go all the way
you wouldn't think about putting out the flame
We both know you'd never cope one day
without winning the prize of my shame

If clarity's in death, then why won't this die?
Years of tearing down our banners, you and I
Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts
Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first

The axe forgets, but the tree remembers
