Re: White house declares COVID to be caused by a lab leak - April 22nd 2025, 07:18 AM

Thanks for the responses. What is everyone's opinion on "emergency powers"? They seemed questionable during COVID and obviously even more questionable now with Trump's declared "emergency". I mean emergency powers were literally how the NAZIs took total control. The Weimar constitution was simply too liberal with emergency power exceptions. I dont necessarily think we shouldnt have some emergency capability in law, but the way it is now the government can just declare an emergency and take the free market away. In my lifetime, Ive now seen both political parties do it.

"People who respect our constitutional democracy with freedom to do business HATE this one SIMPLE trick."

It is controversial. On one hand, they help with actual emergencies. On the other, they can just be declared and normal protections to our liberties go out the window. I was thinking that it should take some sort of supermajority vote amongst representatives from a super majority of states to declare any sort of emergency. But what then, do we do about emergencies that crop up suddenly without a time to vote on it? I would suggest that within 90 days of an emergency being declared, a vote must be held. The vote must be held every 90 days thereafter.
