I really dont know. That is the big question. There are certainly some jobs it will automate, jobs it will create, and jobs that will be minimally affected. Whether it will cause net job loss: im not sure. There is no going back though. The theory behind LLMs actually goes back to a 2017 paper researchers at Google titled "Attention is All You Need". OpenAI actually developed GPT-1 and GPT-2 before 2020-with GPT-1 coming out in 2018. Though they were much more primitive than modern models, it was still technically a LLM. It was a revolution in the field of neural networks that caused this.
LLMs have been around since before the pandemic....they were just too weak to really be useful and served as an advanced but often incorrect autocomplete instead of an assistant. But future rapid devopment towards modern AI became largely inevitable in 2017 even though the modern wave of models and interest started taking off closer to 2023.
