Bullied for having Aspergers

I've been bullied FOREVER for being on the autism spectrum and it's starting to get on my nerves. I've been having suicidal thoughts for quite some time and even though they've never escalated, they've never gone away either.
Of course, since my sister can't keep her mouth shut, everyone knows I'm suicidal. :glare: I've been approached by lots of people saying I'm being selfish because members of the LGBT community kill themselves all the time and I'm begging for attention. (And my gay friend tells me not to listen. :nosweat:) I've even been told that becoming a lesbian would make me a better person! Um... I'm not exactly sure that's how it works. >_> And on top of that, everyone mocks me for waving my hands around or banging my wrists together (I do that when I have too much energy) and just all around being weird.
But yeah, I'm starting to wonder if killing myself would be the easy way out even if I know I'll never have the courage to do it. I know it sounds like I'm overreacting, but I think going through it for seventeen years kind of pushes you over the edge. @_@ What should I do?

I have a similar disorder (some argue it's also part of the spectrum, some don't), my bullies were teachers and it eventually kept me out of the career I wanted before I was even diagnosed. I've been suicidal over it too, I kind of get where you're coming from. I'm sorry that everyone knows and won't leave you alone. Suicide isn't the answer here. I'd suggest the guidance counselor (who would legally have to tell your parents) Your feelings are no one else's business, regardless and yes, a lot of what they're saying doesn't even make sense. That should just be another reason to ignore it, but I know how hard that can be.

Hi There-

I am sorry that you are being bullied for being on the spectrum. I have aspergers syndrome to I was also bullied in high school. What they are doing to you is not OK and I think that you should speak up and tell someone like your guidance counselor or a teacher that you trust! You have the right to be treated with respect. Kate* is right suicide is not the answer! Please consider telling someone!

Re: Bullied for having Aspergers

Hey there,

Firstly, I want to say that it is unfortunate that people are choosing to bully you over your Asperger's. I personally think people bully others who are on the autism spectrum because they choose to not understand. Instead of taking the time to get to know you they are choosing to bully you for being different. In all reality the people that are bullying you now won't matter in ten years. I say this from personal experience. I was bullied horrendously in school and it has left scars but I don't give a crap about the people who used to bully me and since becoming an adult I've met a lot of nice people. I've met people who don't care about the things the bullies did. Personally, I think the same could happen for you as well. I went on a date with a guy who had asperger's and he was super smart and he was relatively successful in that he had a job that he loved.

Yes, you are going to run into some obstacles due to your asperger's but that doesn't mean you can't have a good life. If you kill yourself you will never get the chance to see just how good your life can be.

Bullies suck but I promise as you get older people won't be as big of bullies. I think that since I've been an adult I've only gotten bullied a handful of times.

If you ever want to chat I am around.
