Is cutting bad?

why or why not?

Re: Is cutting bad?

Yes it is. Quite simply for the reason that you're physically damaging yourself as an expression of emotion. Depending on how deep the cut is it can be extermely serious and may lead to hospitalisation. Not only this but thecuts can lead to infections which could cause you more harm than ecpected, and will almost certainly scar you for life. I fully admit I'm being a hypocrit here but you shouldn't cut yourself, you should try and find other ways of dealing with your emotions that are less self destructive (Check the 'Alternatives' sticky thread at the top of the list of forums for ideas.).

I agree with Chuckles. Because cutting something that harms your body, it is not a good way to deal with your emotions since, like what was said before, it leaves scars and can lead to infections. It also becomes such a big part of your life that it is nothing you ever want to become a part of. Once you start cutting it is so hard to stop, and because of that cutting isn't good at all. It is such an addiction, and a harmful one at that.

Re: Is cutting bad?

Yes, I think it is bad. We don't encourage people to bang their heads, bite their tongues, or otherwise deliberately hurt themselves, nor do we encourage people to engage in destructive behaviors such as self-starvation or abuse of chemicals. Why on earth would self-harm be any different? (this is rhetorical)

I will back off here as I have no personal experiences with self harm and therefore cannot offer anything but my own emotional reactions to such behavior.

Cutting is bad if it is used as a way to deal with your emotions.

Though I will say that I believe self harm can be utilized for spiritual reasons by someone who is mentally stable. For example in Christianity alone you have many people who crucify themselves on a cross along with the Opus Dei which has been endorsed by many popes.

yeah it's bad because it never deals with the situation it just buries and the next time you feel upset sad or alone and cut everything that was buried comes back up and you end up cutting twice as much than before

Re: Is cutting bad?

As the above posters said, cutting is bad. Directly, you are injuring yourself and there's risk of infection, and it leaves scars. Also, you should find a more healthy way to deal with emotions. Cutting is harmful and addictive, and doesn't solve anything.

(And I feel like a total hypocrite saying all of this.....so, yeah)

I believe it is. As a recovered self-harmer the scars honestly aren’t what bothers me the most, but the fact that at the time I didn’t see that cutting kept me stuck with the emotions I was trying to let go of even longer. I’m not sure if this is common, but for me seeing the scab or scar while I was still self-harming just reminded me of why I did it and pushed me to cut again. It can turn into a very ugly cycle.

Re: Is cutting bad?

Labelling something like cutting as 'good' or 'bad' is counterproductive. It increases guilt when you do relapse or try it for the first time, like 'Oh my god I'm a terrible person why did I do this'. I think it's definitely healthier to talk about your problems or express them in some other way. Cutting is a short-term fix and that's all. I hesitate to classify it as anything else.

I don't know because the other week I got told it was ok if I was cutting but I don't know if that makes it good or bad or okay, that is a tricky question, I've heard of people tell others its okay if it's keeping them alive, some people think its okay and accept it and others look upon it as though its the worst thing in the world, I think it depends on the personaility of people around who and how they view cutting.

I would say cutting is a bad thing because it harms you physically and emotionally. I know you can stop. If you need anything PM me anytime.

Personally, I think it is. I have scars on my wrists that will never go away. It eases the pain at the moment, but now when I see my scars, I'm ashamed of the way I treated my body . . the way I still continue to treat my body at times. It just becomes an addictive habit, but it doesn't really help you fix the problem.
