Eating while depressed

Sorry, I'm not sure whether to put this in the eating disorders section or the depression section, feel free to move it.

I'm not diagnosed with an eating disorder so I'm not sure if it counts to post this here, but I hate how hard it is to eat with depression. I love food, so much, but when I'm depressed it's so difficult for me to be bothered to eat that I just end up not eating all day long. Not only is it bad for me physically but it also upsets me in general. I'm not a very good cook so I can't really cook anything, atleast not without supervision (for my own peace of mind and for needing help with things). And when I'm desperately hungry if I do eat it's always tiny bits of junk - just the other day I had a mug of hot chocolate, some potato crisps/chips, a bit of chocolate, and a slice of bread, all spaced out hours between. It's so frustrating and difficult.

Sometimes I go by the motto of "fed is best." I buy microwave meals or cereal because those don't actually require much work except maybe stirring whatever the meal in the microwave is. There's no injuring yourself on utensils and there's less of a risk of seriously burning yourself with microwaved meals. I can't get myself to eat breakfast whatever I do so I bought Ensure Plus meal replacement shakes because you just open them and drink them. I'm not saying to do it for every single meal, but it may help if you're in a pinch and really can't get yourself to eat. Maybe you can also get more nutritious things to snack on instead of junk, such as trail mix or a granola bar. Some of the trail mixes even come with M&M pieces so you can get that sweet taste if you're craving it.

Re: Eating while depressed

Hi there,

I can totally relate to not wanting to eat through a depressive episode. There's been several times in which I would graze throughout the day and not have an actual meal. During these times, I would have to force myself to eat, even if it was a sandwich and a piece of fruit.

Is there someone that is able to help you prepare or buy a small and easy meal such as soup or a wrap?

I'm sorry you're going through this and I understand how difficult it can be. I hope you feel better soon and if you ever need anything, feel free to inbox me.

Try Boost plus supplemental drinks. They have 360 calories per drink and are only 8oz. Plenty of vitamins too. They go down very easily. 3 of them will have half your recommended daily caloric intake. This is what I do when I don't have an appetite. Also, honey buns have like 600 calories a pop. This is not a long term solution, but it will help prevent malnutrition in the short term. Sorry you are dealing with this.

The boost may seem expensive to drink in this manner (13 dollars for 6 at the store near me), but it really isn't because that is actually fairly cheap for a day of food.
