Male doctors examining women's private parts

I've always thought this to be wrong, how male doctors can examine the most intimate parts of a woman's body. There's bound to be a lot of male doctors that take advantage of this and of women. What do you think?

I believe you're implying is that a gynecological exam is somehow a sexual thing when it comes to straight, male OBGYNs. I can definitively say it is not. Contrary to what a porn may show you, OBGYNs, including male OBGYNs, are very respectful, professional, and cognizant of the patients' comfort during exams. I've had male gynecologists and it was absolutely never sexual. I am also guessing you're male, or at least a very young AFAB person, or you would know that gynecological exams aren't really arousing for most people, doctors and patients alike. I mean have you ever seen a speculum? They aren't fun.

Many AFAB people prefer to have a female OBGYN, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's because they think they'll have their consent violated somehow by a male OBGYN. It's just a preference.

Are you not aware of all the male doctors that have lost their licence or been imprisoned for sexual misconduct? The list is endless. So obviously you are wrong.

Hi there,

As the above users have mentioned, there are a lot of male (and female) gynecologists that are professional in what they do and do not see their job in any way of a sexual nature. If they do, they are unfit to practice as a doctor.

I don't know if you'd think that this is the same or not, but my OBGYN identifies as female and she is also a lesbian. She has a wife, who I am assuming she's had some sort of sexual encounter with, and with being a lesbian comes liking vaginas. She's never treated me inappropriately and had actually been a lot more compassionate than a lot of the providers who I have had who I think are heterosexual females. She was the first to really take me seriously and also the first to ask me my orientation.

I personally don't like male doctors examining me for physicals or OBGYN exams but that's just a personal thing where I like having people who have the same parts examining me. I My mom on the other hand has had male providers for most of her life up until recently and has never once been treated poorly. Her GYN and his son delivered my sister and me, and she had a male primary care provider until he retired. But of course, that's anecdotal.

I've also seen a lot of people who have said that they've found male GYNs to be gentler and more compassionate than the female GYNs they've seen.

Remember that anyone can be a perpetrator of sexual misconduct, not just male-identifying doctors. Additionally, it's not just OBGYNs that commit misconduct. It's unfortunate whenever anyone does it because they are in a position of power, but it is not limited to male-identifying people or people in the GYN profession.

Like someone said above, GYN exams are nooooot pleasant. I have a condition called vaginismus so mine are downright painful, but for a lot of people they're at least uncomfortable and you're talking about sexual topics. The doctors aren't touching you in the same way as someone would touch you if you're having sex. They're feeling for abnormalities.

So, while some people prefer either AFAB or AMAB doctors, it's not super weird that an AMAB doctor is in the GYN profession.

Nope, most doctors that perv on naked women are going to act professional and keep their dirty secrets to themselves.

Re: Male doctors examining women's private parts

Generally speaking, doctors, regardless of gender, are not going to finance themselves through medical school just to be abuse their professional powers.

Of course, there will be some who do abuse, and who are able to carry on being professional, but generally, these are in the minority.

Regardless, it's still in the best interests of the general public to take their health seriously and not to put the fear of being abused (generally low) above their health.

And as said above, you can choose which gender, or OBGYN that you feel more comfortable with. So if someone does not want to be examined by a male due to not feeling comfortable then they can choose to be examined by a female instead.

I think in reverse, the same question could equally be asked of women examining male genitalia. Not all men are going to take advantage of a women just because they're looking at her vagina. Yes, it does happen, men cannot all be tarred with the same brush solely because there are those that ruin it for the rest of them.

While I've never been examined by a male or female doctor down there, the only reason I would request a female is due to my past history. I've been alone with male doctors before and I've felt perfectly safe.

I can understand the concern here. I think that now a days, male doctors are not allowed to perform a gynecological exam without another person, such as a Medical Assistants, there. It is also well within your right to have someone accompany you for the exam. I do not know statistically how many male doctors have abused their power during an exam. I doubt that a large number of male doctors are like this. I doubt that male doctors chose the gynecology specialty to be perverted. That's a lot of time, money, effort, schooling, etc. I choose to believe that gynecologists become gynecologists because they love woman's anatomy, how it works, pregnancy, etc. I'm not saying it's impossible and hasn't happened, but it is rare. There are a lot of safety measures put in place so this doesn't happen.

Personally I prefer a male gynecologist. I have found them to be a lot more compassionate and kinder than female ones and in a way, I think part of that is because they have different anatomy. I have had exams done by two male gynecologists, one of whom performed one of my surgeries. I trusted him and liked him a lot more than my female gynecological surgeon. Of course everyone is different though.

Thanks for your reply, but unfortunately you, like everybody else who has commented, have failed to understand my point. I have never said nor implied that most doctors abuse women or go into gynecology just for the purpose of seeing women naked. I don't know where people come up with these crazy suggestions. I never implied such a thing. My point was that even if a doctor acts "professional" doesn't mean he's not secretly perving on the woman or getting off on examining her. The question is, would most women be comfortable if they knew that their gynecologist was getting aroused while examining them and having dirty thoughts?

Doctors have seen more genitalia than we've had hot dinners, I wouldn't worry about it.

It isn't wrong, they are just doctors, and trust me that they don't look at you as a woman, but as another patient, with another problem.

Err... I think it's better that female doctors can do that, but it's also true that you studied for that, so you know what's best. Ugh, it's always a question that never have an answer.

You realize that woman can also take advantage of woman right? I think that Drs. Don’t become Drs. They can abuse people. Some may, and some may get aroused by it but that few in between.

I also want to point something out makes can take advantage of any gender, and so can females. So if you go on the assumption that gynecologist can take advantage of their patience then nobody should be one.

I have been sexual abused by a girl so I do know it happens.
