Anyone ever have a sleep study?

My ENT wants me to go for a sleep study to test for sleep apnea. I have an appointment for a consult with the sleep specialist, but not an actual sleep study appointment yet. I'm really nervous about the actual study though. What do they do and what are your experiences? What if you can't sleep? What if you have to pee while hooked up to everything? I have to pee all the time! D: Do you have to stay still so you don't knock the wires, because I am a violent sleeper. Anything I should know?

Hello Dez,

When going to this, it can be hard because you feel like you don't know what is going to happen. If you have a pillow or blanket that you always use, you can bring them with you, to help you so that you can go to sleep. If you need to use the bathroom, you just let them know and they will come in to let you go. I have this article on this, if you would like to read it when you have time, it may help you out and feel better. https://www.uclahealth.org/sleepcent...-a-sleep-study I have never been, if I was going to go, I would have my favorite pajamas on, my pillow and pink blanket with me and maybe a stuffed animal to help me to relax. When you go try to ask as many questions as you can to help you to feel better. Also if you are scared to talk to them, write them down and try asking them when you go. I wish you the best with this and hope that you will be able to relax and sleep during this.

Regardless of the type of sleep study you have, results will be sent ... You can also ask about having someone accompany you to the set-up. If you have symptoms of sleep apnea, your doctor may ask you to have a sleep study. Here's what to expect. If you have sleep apnea, relaxation of throat muscles combines with a narrowed airway to interrupt breathing. If the testing confirms OSA, you'll be ready to get the treatment you need. Lab testing: for complex cases. Home testing isn't for everybody.

Re: Anyone ever have a sleep study?

I had both a nighttime and daytime sleep study done; both are very different from the two. The nighttime one they attach these probes attached to wires to your head. They use some sandpaper thing to your scalp so this gel stuff stays then they place the tape with the wire to your head. I can't remember how many wires it was, it was a lot!

The room itself was cozy and the bed was comfy. It was weird sleeping with my hair all weirdly placed from the gel. All the wires basically sit behind the pillow, mine did anyways. I wore some heart band around my chest to monitor my heart, that was a bit uncomfortable. I managed to fall asleep okay and ended up needing the washroom during the night so had to buzz for a nurse to help unhook me. I had to carry everything with me around my neck hanging from this device.

The daytime sleep test was basically naps. It was complete hell. 20 minute sleep naps, being woken up. I think I had to do 4 or 5 of them. I had an hour or two to do nothing and wander the hospital and have lunch with all these wires sticking out of my head. I felt miserable after it, going home wasn't the best, I felt like someone hit me over the head. I was cranky. I remember I wasn't allowed to have caffeine for a few days before and that day.

It was such an experience.

I forgot to mention I had an at home sleep study. Nothing on my scalp but I had a nasal cannula and the tape they gave me would NOT stick so I couldn't keep the cannula stuck to my cheeks so it kept falling out of my nose. I'm scared that will affect my results or I'll have to redo it.

Oh yea! I remember having that thing in my nose. So annoying to sleep with something poking in your nose. I think mine wrapped around my ears and there was some tape I think. It felt like I had oxygen in my nose without oxygen going into my nose.

Hopefully, you'll find out your results soon. I am not sure about redoing the test, you could call and ask them about it?

I’ll wait and see what they say about this one and then go from there. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll have enough. They said it takes about a week to process.

At mine it felt like you were staying the night at a hotel in a room. You had a bathroom, a TV, etc. I have moderate sleep apnea and have to use a CPAP machine to sleep at night with. You get hooked up to a bunch of wires and everything!
