How to get to know a guy at work?

So there is this guy at work that I want to try and get to know. I don't see him very often, just for a few minutes a day at work, but he seems pretty cool from the short convos I've had with him. I'm not sure how to go about getting to know him better... I have him on facebook, but he doesn't get on very often.

So how should I go about getting to know him? Should I message him on facebook? Should I ask for his number in the few seconds I get to see him at work?

Since he doesn't access Facebook very often, it seems that asking for his phone number would make more sense. I would tell him exactly what you told us: "Hey, can I get your phone number? We haven't spoken much, but from our short conversations, you seem like a cool guy, and I'd like to get to know you better."
