Exercise likes/dislikes

Whenever I'm in a consultation with a new client, I always ask this question. I find a lot of people tend to gravitate away from cardiovascular exercise because they get out of breath quickly, or others find it boring (myself included). Most, if not all of my clients, prefer wanting to learn how to perform free weights exercises safely and effectively, as well as learn how the fixed-pin resistance equipment works.

When I probe deeper and see what specific exercises they like/dislike, it generally comes down to dislike for high-impact cardio, or continuous cardio on a bike or treadmill because you're just moving on the spot and there's nothing really fun to look at (unless you're in a gym with those fancy screens). Some dislike exercises for health-related reasons, such as squats due to the effect it can have on the knee joint. Whereas others dislike exercises like weightlifting because of misconceptions that lifting weights will make a woman bulky.

In terms of specific exercises, I really disliked split squats (before I buggered up my knees) because of how difficult they are. I already dislike leg exercises because they're just not fun. I disliked using the climbmill/stairmaster because I hated constantly being out of breath and after a heavy leg session, it really killed me. since I'm unable to really go up steps without my knees clicking to death, I can't use that piece of equipment anymore and I've actually come to dislike it.

Do you have any exercise likes/dislikes? If so, why?

I like the treadmill because I have Netflix and Hulu on my phone so I watch it there. I like Zumba classes because of the music or movement but have been afraid to go because of Covid. I might start again. Like others, I want to do strength training and learn how to use weights/weight machines safely. Right now I find it embarrassing.

I hate it all really. Exercise-induced asthma, and growing up undiagnosed killed cardio for me (it's just associated with having asthma attacks no one believed, and not being allowed to stop), using weights and/or machines just makes me afraid I'm going to hurt myself, my Zoloft makes me over-sweat with minimal exertion, exercising around other people, especially with my disability, makes me crazy self-conscious and brings back the nightmarish days of gym class where both teachers and students bullied me. Nothing about it is enjoyable for me. I'm at a point now where I need to lose weight, but it's not going to happen unless I am literally tricked into working out.

I have such a hard time with that with some of my meds too. I'll be dripping from doing a basic activity. It does make exercising in public embarrassing.

Re: Exercise likes/dislikes

I have hypermobility spectrum disorder (possibly EDS), so I can't really tolerate anything high-impact. My favourite exercises have always been things like bike riding, roller skating, ice skating and when I'm able, yoga. I tend to prefer any exercise that feels more like a fun hobby/activity.

In terms of a specific exercise - I've always loved squats and anything that targets glutes/thighs/hamstrings, etc. With my hypermobility that tends to be the strongest part of my body - I can't really maintain muscle mass on my upper body so upper body exercises have always been annoying for me, haha.

I'm willing to try anything really. I quite like yoga and cardio based workouts. :)

I wouldn't say I really like exercise but if I was in a gym I'd rather be on a treadmill or an exercise bike than doing weights. I don't enjoy anything high impact though and I find running really hard on my ankles due to injuries I've had in the past. I don't mind walking out and about though where there are things to look at and enjoy.

I enjoy working out, I have a lot of fun.:) I love dancing, running and walking my three dogs. I'm glad that I get to do them everyday. :)

I don't exercise for the fun of it, I exercise to try to get myself back into shape and to lose weight. I am so out of sorts that even light exercise can cause me to feel faint and breathless; so I need to do small increments and if I am consistent, it does improve. I prefer to do the treadmill, but that can get really boring; I prefer going out for walks instead because there's different things to look at.

I occasionally use another equipment, which I don't know the name of. But I am not sure how to use it properly. I am always conflicted between envisioning climbing steps continuously and walking across snow on sleds. So, I stay off that one so I don't accidentally injure myself.

Sometimes, I will dance around in private with music playing in my head. I either have a set song in my mind or make one up as I move my feet. It's really fun; but, again, I can only do that for very short periods.
