Is there a benefit in letting a 15 year old visit her mom who will be in jail for six months or is she too young?
it is a check fraud charge and a six month sentence. Daughter is fine with visiting, her mom says bring her if she wants,. I don’t have a problem with her seeing mom, it is solely the environment and seeing guards and other inmates. A 15 year old that only just started high school is probably not old and mature enough to visit jail.

Hmm, Im not sure. I know of a case where a girl was sentenced for manslaugher due to speeding (sentence was since commuted by the governor as it was excessively long). The dad did not allow her to see her kid and that was devastating to her.
I have visited someone in jail and found that it is a very clean experience. I simply had to show ID and then wait my turn(it felt very similar to going to the DMV) to talk on a telephone that had a screen. I wasn’t allowed to actually “see” the person except through the virtual video service. I never even saw the inside of the “jail part” of the jail while visiting as the visitor center was in a different building. I didnt see sketchy behavior or conversations from visitors as it is all supervised. All jails are different, but I imagine it is a fairly clean experience at most. Are you concerned that seeing her own mom in jail will make her see crime as more acceptable? One benefit that I see is that cops don’t find 15 to be too young to be sent to jail, so it may be good to see personally that jail is a “real life” place and what incarceration can be like for the incarcerated and their loved ones. She will be safe but will see a reality of society that most people don’t see everyday. If she was 8, it would be different. But I can see some potential educational value in this depending on the circumstances. |

Hi there,
This is solely something that is a decision between you and the family. There could be some positives that can come out of this in regards to seeing a jail environment will deter teenagers from wanting to go down that path of criminal activities. I know of a show that wayward teenagers have to visit jails and be educated in order to stop them from doing what they're doing. |
