I will still tip at bars that I am a regular at. However, if this passes, I am done tipping people at places that I don't expect to return to. I will write "if I have to pay taxes, you should too" on the tip line. Why should anyone spend their taxed income to give a tip to someone who is essentially now going to be tax exempt? I am well aware that the restaurant and bar industry is full of shady criminals who openly use drugs and don't report all their income, but making this law is absurd. It benefits customer facing people while possibly raising the prices for people who don't work with customers or don't work a tipped position. Hell, most of them get free drinks almost daily from patrons anyways. Why should I tip people in this shady industry when they are exempt from income tax. LOL. If I don't expect to return to a restaurant, then I will no longer be tipping. I will explain why on the tip line.

But if that is how they make their money, why should it be tax exempt? What is so special about customer facing workers that they don't need to be taxed like others? Fine, I won't tip zero, but I will take the equivalent tax out of the tip because I have to pay taxes. If they are now tax exempt, then they are making more money overall. But it is due to reasons that I find unfair, so I will reduce the tip because the tip is no longer being taxed. Less goes to Uncle Sam so a reduced tip will net them the same money. I don't see many servers struggling to pay rent. They make so much in tips that they already earn disproportionately to other workers who don't work with customers. In fact, that is the real reason they have the tipping system. If servers were paid by their employers the equivalent of what the cooks make, then many would just stop serving. Tipping is a horrible system, period. Should be abolished. I wouldn't mind an increase in menu prices to compensate, but the servers need to be paid by their employer and most of their income should not depend on a "voluntary" gift from the customer. Of course, servers would be the first to oppose such a measure, because they know they make more the way it is. It is also a reason female servers make more for literally the same work, because some men just love showing their money to women. Some men will leave a 100 dollar tip on a 50 dollar tab and also buy her free drinks that she gets to enjoy on the clock.

They make less than that in some states, but do you know why? It is because servers would be the first to complain about any reform to the system. If you paid them what the cook makes, they would probably immediately quit and complain about how "unfair" it is. They want those tips! That is what they literally want their income to be. As such, it should be taxed. They aren't victims, they are beneficiaries of a system that is unfair and inherently full of bias to begin with. Customers don't have to obey laws regarding fairness of wage across different genders and ethnic groups. A conversationally awkward older black man is going to receive much less in tips than a young blonde girl any day of the week.Tipped employees earn significantly more than many other types of workers. A bartender can earn more than a paramedic who is out saving lives. Servers don't want a fixed income, they want to get tips. That is why the law is the way it is. It is crazy, but not in the way you think. Servers in the US feel entitled to a "gift" from customers and customers are socially obligated to comply(can get banned if you don't give enough of this "voluntary gift"). They don't care much about what they make directly from the employer in the US. They are paid by the customer. As that is their income, it should be taxed like other worker''s incomes. That is simply fairness. Also, abolishing tipping completely is actually instilling a much more fair system. No reason the hot blonde girl who is a bartender should make more than a paramedic simply because some dudes want to show off and tip insane amounts and also buy her a bunch of drinks she can enjoy while on the clock. Restaurant industry is shady as hell too. Full of literally the most selfish people. Some of the shadiest people, drug addicts, and money launderers work at restaurants.

Also, due to redistribution of money, having tipped employees make more contributes to the rising costs that non-tipped workers must pay.

Why is my bartender making more than the paramedics? And why are they now trying to make them essentially tax exempt as well? This is the best thing for servers- they make little from their employers so don't have to pay much taxes under this new system. But they make a LOT (90-95 percent PLUS) on tips in America which the government wants to consider non-reportable income? So they make 50k a year but only have to pay the taxes of someone making essentially nothing. Does not seem fair at all! Again, servers would be the first to complain about a flat wage! If tips are tax exempt, then they should reduce the wages of tipped employees to zero and also reduce menu prices. They get essentially all their money from tips after all and they love the system the way it is!

At my local bar, they hold a birthday celebration for each (female) bartender. The manager gives them a banner saying "birthday" and by the end of the night, she will have hundreds of dollars pinned on it (which to me is SO cringe, worse than panhandling- I got nothing at all for my last birthday, nor did I expect anything or anyone to remember--seems like a blatant "it is my special day I feel entitled to, give me money and recognition" to me) given by drunk men, which is on top of tips they receive. I have seen this twice in the past month.

Thanks for the response. Servers make significantly more than many other workers. They are just paid by the customer, and thats the way they like it. They don’t want a flat wage, so why shouldnt it be taxed? Why tax someone who works at a fast food restaurant but not a fine restaurant who makes 10x more? Make it make sense. As I am taxed and make less than the average server, I will be subtracting the tax from the tip. It’s only fair. Bartenders are not low wage workers, they make disproportionately more…. due to tips. They are paid little by their employers in many states BECAUSE their income is from tips. As such, they should have to pay income tax like the rest of us!

Another problem with tipping is the positive feedback loop. Suppose Ive just had a bunch of expenses and am feeling less generous, but still tip 15percent, but Im not generous and dont go 25 percent. There is a chance the server will nickel and dime me next time for things I didnt know cost money (like a styrofoam cup to spit my dipping tobacco in) or just plain provides ruder service. Then Im less inclined to tip generously when seeing it on the bill or receiving said service, so I end up tipping the same or less and getting intentionally bad service the next time. Then after receiving bad service that was intentional, I dont feel generous at all. Worsening the service. Eventually Ill get banned for not providing enough of this “voluntary payment” and get banned. I know to oppose the positive feedback effect by tipping highly when service gets worse, but it isnt foolproof and if they hold grudges and dont immediately return good service the next time, it will go downhill. Once, a rude bartender announced my tip of 1 dollar to the rest of the bartenders. “A whole dollar, lol”. Yeah, maam, you didnt serve me all night and never asked me how I was doing. You poured me a 3 dollar beer and I didnt order food. Yes, you stupid entitled bitch, 1 dollar. Wtf you think you deserve for 20 seconds of your time? You spent all of the time socializing with other bartenders and not asking if I need a refill,etc.
