Work

okay this summer I've been helping out at a holiday club/summer camp, and I do enjoy it, it's stressful due to the age groups I work with ( 3-12 years ), we also have junior helpers young people aged 14+ who help with the running of the club and help with the activities etc, however at lunch time I have found myself the subject of questioning by the junior helpers, now I don't mind questions about what my group have done, how I am, what I enjoy doing etc outside of club , but the questions recently have been more about me and my personal life such as my sexuality, and whether or not I am a virgin... I replied with none of your business and walked off, and told my team leader/boss, the incident was dealt with.. the junior helpers apologised for the offensive questions... however since the incident I have felt incredibly nervous and uncomfortable around the junior leaders... and I don't quite know how to approach it with my manager/boss/team leader as the incident has been dealt with and there hasn't like been any further incidents.. and I don't want to seem like I am over-reacting or making a fuss over nothing.... but I am nervous around the junior helpers...

I’d be honest with your manager. Let your manager know that you are nervous to be around the junior helpers after the incident because you’re afraid it’ll happen again (or whatever else the reason is) and see if your manager has any suggestions on how to deal with them. For example they may have suggestions on what you can say or do if it happens again or they may have assignments for you where you don’t have to interact with the junior helpers as much. Or they can at least have suggestions on how to get over your nerves.

If you don’t want to tell your manager I’d just try to limit the conversations you have with the junior helpers and keep it to work related topics only, or whatever you’re comfortable with sharing. If the junior helpers ask you can say you want to keep things work related but that it’s no offense to them.

If you do have to work with them, remind yourself that they have been reprimanded already and apologized, so hopefully they’ve learned their lesson. You can give them one more chance if you’re comfortable with it but I understand if you’re not given what happened! They’re young, so they have to learn and face consequences.
