How to find a new hobby

How to find a new hobby

Whatever stage of life you’re in, it’s important to regularly engage in hobbies that bring you joy and fulfilment. However, you might be feeling overwhelmed by all of the options out there. If you’re on the hunt for a new hobby, take a look at the points below for some guidance.
  • Think about what you enjoyed when you were younger. Are there any hobbies you had as a child that you might like to pick up again? As you get older you can reignite those passions, and even build on them. For example if you enjoyed collecting toys, you could try crocheting or needle-felting your own now. Or you can pick up where you left off, and get right back into that hobby you haven't done in years.
  • Look into your friends’ hobbies. While solo hobbies can be a lot of fun, it can also be great to share them with someone else. If you have a friend who’s always talking about their model train collecting, or a family member who’s invited you to join their sports club, now might be the perfect time to give it a go.
  • Find out what’s available in your local area. Depending on where you live, there may be organisations nearby that you can join. These can cover a broad range of activities, from book clubs to hiking groups to woodworking classes, and you might even discover a hobby you’ve never heard of before!
  • Try a few things out to see what fits. When you start a new hobby, you don’t have to sign up for it for an extended period of time. It’s okay to try an introductory class or a first project and then decide that it isn’t for you. You can try them either at the same time or one after the other, and you should only stick with the ones that you really enjoy – hobbies are meant to be fun, after all!
