Really "down" when on my period

I'm 14 and was just needing some advice. I haven't had it for long (about a year) and was just wondering if it was normal to feel "down" and lazy in a way when it first starts. I just don't want to get out of bed lol or do anything around the house.

Also, do you have any tips for getting out of that slump? Thanks a bundle!

xoxoxoxo

p.s. first time posting so I'm a little nervous :bleh:

I totally feel the same the first day. Having your period is a pretty brutal thing, really. I just force myself to get up and go do things when I don't feel like it. And I take Advil, to get rid of any cramps.

Hey there,

First of all welcome to TeenHelp! Don't be nervous, we're lovely here :)
It's pretty normal for women to feel down leading up to and during their period, your hormones levels are rising and falling which is known as premenstrual syndrome.

There are things will help to ease these symptoms such as eating a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, cutting back on processed foods. Also reducing the amount of salt in your diet and drink plenty of water and less caffeine.Make sure that you get plenty of sleep at night. These will help a bit but getting cramps and feeling generally down is usually pretty normal.

If you are finding it too much or have problems perhaps talk to your doctor and see if they can help at all.

I hope this helps,
Charli :)

Hi there! First of all, welcome to TH :D

Second, that's totally normal. When I start my period, I want to do nothing but lie in bed and eat junk all day. Take a painkiller if you have cramps, because those can really bring down your whole day. It also helps to eat healthy foods (even though you might not want to) like fruits, veggies, things with protein. It helps give you a little boost, especially at breakfast. Exercise is said to really help too, but personally, I don't :P

Hope this helps, take care!

I think all girls feel a bit down or lazy when they're on their period. I know for me, if it weren't for having a full time job, I'd stay in bed for the entire duration of my period. It's completely normal.

Don't worry about it, I'm pretty sure everyone feels that way on their first day.
Me, I get anemic on mine so it's worse than normal girl's and I pretty much feel that way the whole time.. But I'm not sure how to get rid of that feeling. >,<

It definitely is normal to feel down like this during your period. I know I am the same way, and my moods can get really bad. It definitely is normal. I eat a lot and just want to lay in bed all day because I get emotional a lot.

I agree that you should get a balanced diet and healthy amount of exercise during this. Exercise is also great to release stress. If you have cramps you can take a painkiller. I use Midol but there are plenty of others out there that can definitely help!

Get up and get out there during your period and still have fun with friends and allow things you do to lift your spirits.

If you are having problems with your period or if you are concerned with how down you get, you can always talk to your doctor and see what they may suggest for you!

Hey there, I am the same and before I get my period I get extremely irritable, snappy etc etc. It's pretty normal and it sucks having to get up. I have only had cramps once and that was because of my tablets and I took two aspirin and it took a few minutes but it helped.

Have fun ;)

Jay.

Hi there! Welcome to TH. :D

I get that way a lot too. I get really snappy and down, emotional to no end. It's horrible. I think it could be because of PMS and hormones, they're up and down. What I do for the cramps is take ibuprofen (pain reliever). It helps me. And I just listen to music, sit it out and hang out with my best friend that gets me in a better mood. :)

Good luck hun.

YES. It's completely normal--there's nothing wrong with you.

Right before/during my period, I get depressed and easily irritated. I feel ugly and fat. It probably doesn't help that sometimes I'll break out and actually gain a couple pounds until it goes away.

The thing I find that best helps is to remember this: it will pass. As long as you recognize that you're not going to feel like this forever, you'll speed along the process of feeling like yourself again.

Another thing that helps me--yoga. Lots of yoga positions can be beneficial to relieving cramps. Plus it's very relaxing.

Good luck!

Hey there. It really isn't that abnormal for this to happen. And not only when it starts! For the majority of the period, I feel down, depressed, needy, and especially lazy. It's absolutely normal, and one thing that helps for me is eating healthy and sitting straight.

Hey, I'm lucky enough not to have any real mood changes when I get mine, (i get them the rest of the time instead!) but my sister turns into a really moody cow! It just seems to depend on the person. I get cramps really badly, my sister gets moody and my mum gets both to a lesser extent. I have friends that just want to chill and eat junk all the time... it's different for everyone, but each is totally normal :)
