How to make button bracelets

Do you have a messy junk drawer with miscellaneous buttons lying around? Maybe you're a button collector, or a pack rat who doesn't like to let go of things. You can use your buttons to create bracelets or key chains. Your old buttons will easily transform into something extravagant. This inexpensive craft makes a unique piece of jewelry that you can keep for yourself or give to someone as a gift.

Materials needed:

Buttons
Thread
A ruler

Step one: Measure your wrist using the thread, and place it against the ruler so you can see how much string and how many buttons you'll need. Note: Buttons with four holes will need double the amount of string.

Step two: Tie a knot at the end of the string, but leave enough to tie the bracelet together when you're done. If you're using buttons with four holes, split the string in half and tie it so that you leave a loop at the top.

Step three: Pick your buttons. Make sure buttons all have two holes, or all have four holes. Don't mix the two. Lie your buttons out in the way you want the bracelet to look. This will make it easier for you when you're making your bracelet.

Step four: Thread the thread through the buttons. Use an under-over pattern each time by inserting the thread underneath the button, then inserting it into the next hole from the top of the button. If you're using buttons with four holes, thread one side with one string, and then thread the other with the second string.

Step five: Repeat step four until you reach your desired length.

Step six: Tie the other end of the bracelet, and then tie both ends together and trim any remaining thread. If your bracelet has a loop at the top, you can slip a clasp through. You can also attach a key ring to make a key chain.

Tip: Clear coat nail polish can be used to seal knots to prevent them from loosening. They can also be used to help mend fraying threads when applied over the thread.
