Telling the school would be an amazing step. I think the fact you're thinking about telling them at all is a good sign that at least a part of you doesn't want to go through with this. You can tell them in a similar way to how you told us and even tell it to them in writing if you think it would make things easier. I've told trusted people in the form of a letter before and it really does help get things out if you're nervous.
