Tattoo design! And advice please? -
April 17th 2010, 11:19 AM
I decided VERY recently that I wanted a tattoo to symbolize everything I've overcome in the past years. Tonight, I sat down and started designing one.
On the top wing, it says "RIP" for my pets I've lost. I took each death very hard. My dog (pictured in my signature) recently died and I'm still trying to get over that.
On the front wing it has a new My Chemical Romance lyric, "The world is ugly, but you're beautiful to me." That band saved my life and I wanted to incorporate them somehow. Besides, it's a gorgeous lyric.
I love hearts and I've always doodled swirls. Tiger lilies are my favorite flower, so how could I not draw one?
As for the butterfly, it was what I chose as my personal metaphor for a class I had last year (it was like an art therapy class). I hadn't expected to feel so deeply about it, but butterflies just kept appearing. I drew them in every single assignment. I started to ask myself why, and the answer I came to, though not fully developed, was rather deep and astonishing. It was definitely more than the usual, "I'm like a butterfly because I've transformed into this gorgeous thing and now I can confidently take flight." Not that there's anything wrong with that....
But anyway...what do you think?
Oh, and as this will be my first tattoo, I'd like to ask how badly does it hurt? A friend (as well as my mom) said it feels like a bunch of paper cuts....

I think its beautiful and if you want it, go for it. Its not too bad pain wise, just depends where you have it, but honestly, its not as bad as people say it is.

I think that you might want to make the words bigger, because I think letters that small won't look good on a tattoo.
I also just want to point out, that while your pets are important to you, will you still want to tell people 20 years from now the RIP on you is for a dog? Personally, I won't go that far.

Letters are very hard to make out in a tattoo when they are that small. Though I absolutely love the design, I think you should maybe consider making them bigger, having less, or not having them on the butterfly.
You are very talented by the way [:

Thank you so much you guys for all the feedback! I do realize that the lettering is small and I probably wouldn't want it on the wings. This is just a sketch I did at three in the morning. Looking at it now, I could think of better places for the lyric and RIP.
But to answer Elizabeth, yes I would tell people 20 years from now that the RIP is for my dead dogs and cat. When I was suicidal, my pets were the only people there for me. Other than My Chemical Romance, they were the only things that kept me alive. I love my pets more than anything and I'm not ashamed of it. They were more my family than my human relatives, and they cared more for me than my family. So yes, I would gladly tell people that the RIP is for my dead pets 20 years from now.

That is a beautiful tattoo and I love the meanings behind it, they make it really special. Post some pictures of the tattoo when you get it done, or the final design.

What a beautiful design! It is SO important that a tattoo means something to you, and this seems to be such an important piece of who you are.
Good luck.

Thanks!
Having a tattoo that really meant something to me was the only way I'd ever get one. I mean, yeah I like them, but I really don't like needles. But I feel so strongly about wanting a visual and artistic representation of everything I loved and never thought possible means so much to me.
As an added bonus, I think I convinced my parents to buy it for me for an early birthday present!

Absolutly beautiful design. I can say, you will probably never regret getting a tattoo that means that much to you
I just want to say though, I would go in and get it prices/talk to the artist ahead of time. 90% chance he won't be able to do words/designs that small, like the lettering in white etc. Too small. Talk to him though, find out your options. It's only been my experience that they cannot go that small.

I really like it. It's eye-catching, and it's meaningful. Though, I was wondering about the lettering - as Melissa said, I think it might be too small.
Still, I like it.

Beautiful design - you're really talented! I do think that you need to make it so the writing is clearer, but a tattoo artist will be able to adapt it for you. It sounds like it means a lot to you! Hope it turns out great!

Thank you guys so much! I already decided against the words being the way they are in this design...and I'm shading a new design that I like better. I'll post that one when I'm done.
