Different Game Genres

If you already are a gamer or you are getting into games for entertainment, there are many different types of games out there. The thousands of games and dozens of consoles can make it difficult to choose what to play. This article will cover many different genres of games to help you pick a genre that would best suit your gaming interests.

Adventure:
Adventure games include interactive story telling by exploring areas of the game through puzzle-solving. Typically, you play a major character role in the game where the story is focused on media, literature and film. Some of the popular adventure games are: Minecraft, Game of Thrones, or Five Nights at Freddy's.

Board:
Board games are a popular game genre that started before online gaming and consoles. Board games are a way to gather with family or friends. There are many different types of board games; some of the most popular are: Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, Clue, and Game of Life. Board games have a variety of genres like strategy, mystery, solving a puzzle, and chance.

Card:
You normally play with a deck of cards around a table with family and friends. Card games can be played online through a generator or with other online players. You can also invite friends to join the game with you. Some popular online card games include Solitaire, Skip-Bo, or Uno.

Educational:
Learning new math, science or reading skills doesn't always have to be boring. A popular education focused game for toddlers and kids is called Leap Frog. Leap Frog makes learning fun and interesting for kids. Others are ABCmouse.com, Funbrain, and PBS Kids.

Motion:
The game system called Nintendo Wii is a motion based console, which allows you to use your body's motions to move and play characters. Some games you could play are sports that require a hand held device; golf, soccer, tennis, bowling, baseball, etc. These games allow your heart rate to increase as you are holding the device making motions of swinging or hitting a ball, which can be a fun way to exercise.

Music:
You can sing and laugh with friends and family by playing a favorite game called karaoke, where you follow the screen and sing along to the words while the music is playing. Some of these games you can dance to, for instance, Just Dance. You can also play musical instruments online, through games such as Guitar Hero. Other such games are High School Musical Sing Along and Dancing with the Stars.

Puzzle:The most common puzzle, putting pieces together to create the picture, takes a lot of time and mental skill. Putting a variety of falling blocks or objects together, like Tetris or Lumines, is another type of puzzle. There are also logic puzzles like Sudoku Gridmaster, and Minesweeper is a hidden puzzle game.

Racing:
A game where you drive a vehicle around a race track with other players, either online or multiplayer. Some racing games are Mario Kart, Gran Turismo, or Need for Speed.

RPG:
RPG stands for Role-Playing Game, and includes a character you play mostly in a fantasy or science fiction game setting.
  • Action:
    Where you are use your hand-eye coordination and reaction time; these games are usually physical challenges.
  • MMPORG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing):
    Where players have a virtual online real time gaming experience with other players. The most popular game is from Blizzard, World of Warcraft.
  • Online:
    Online RPGs is playing real time with other players playing games like Call of Duty.
  • Tabletop RPGs (pen-and-paper role-playing)
    Players act out and describe their next move deciding on what actions to do within the rules of the game. A dungeon master is chosen to create a storyline for the other players setting a role for them to play out. During these games a character is played where they perform actions and words in character. This game is called, Dungeons and Dragons or DND.
Shooter:
This type of game is where you are able to shoot things down, like popping a balloon to get something from it, like you do in Donkey Kong. It can also be a game where you knock down bad guys by shooting them. Some games could be Tomb Raider, Call of Duty, or Borderlands to list a few.

Simulation:
A simulation game copies the real life activities or real fictional reality. Simulators are used for training, analysis, and prediction. The Sims gives a good example, where it copies the real fictional activities of everyday living.

Sports:
Many of us enjoy playing sports or watching it on TV. You can also play sport games online like soccer, hockey, volleyball, tennis, etc. This can also help you to understand how sports work in real life, and depending on how you play the sports games, you can also be physically active. For example, on the Nintendo Wii.

Table:
One of the unique aspects of table games is that any age group can enjoy the games being played. Table games require you standing and using handles to move the players around. Some fun table games using handles are sports games like soccer or hockey. Some table games don't require you to use handle but to use a racket, for instance table tennis.

Trivia:
Trivia is a game that requires a lot of thinking and knowledge about a variety of different subjects in the world. You can play in a group with others or follow a DVD on the TV. You can also play trivia online with others or invite your friends to play. Some trivia games are Scene It?, Trivial Pursuit, and Dibs.

Knowing a little bit about some of the many game genres you can enjoy will help you pick games that best suit your personality and interests. Happy gaming!
