Hmm, well, here are some I like and believe fit your criteria: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, anything by Ellen Hopkins, and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. If you're in the mood for something adventurous, I recommend The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. If you're in the mood for something witty and humorous, I suggest the Artemis Fowl series or Airman by Eoin Colfer (or most any of his other books). Artemis Fowl is more fantastic than Airman, and Airman is more of a mature read than Artemis Fowl. I suppose Airman could be called a "grown up" fairy tale of sorts.

I use the catalogue system also; it is very convienient. What are some of the books you like? The better acquainted I am with your reading tastes, the better recommendations I can give that suit them.
