What are you doing for the environment? -
June 5th 2022, 10:22 PM
Today is World Environment Day & and protecting our wonderful planet is all of our responsibility. So I was wondering what you are all doing for the environment, whether making little changes in your life to big projects, it would be great to hear your ideas!

I try to recycle, but I heard that a lot of what you recycle doesn't actually end up GETTING recycled. Is that true?
Do you ever get a little bit tired of life
Like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die
Like you're hanging by a thread but you gotta survive
'Cause you gotta survive

I've heard that too. I recycle scrupulously, but sometimes when I go to throw away the trash in the neighbourhood bin enclosure, I see that somebody had put mixed in the paper container, or paper in the plastic container etc. Plus I've seen the garbage collectors putting waste from all the containers together...
I work in a coffee shop, and we have some plastic products (for example lids for takeaway coffee cups or plastic cups for frappuccinos). It's scary how often people ask for additional lids/spoons etc and throw them away immediately after use. I've never seen anyone bring their own takeaway mug. I guess it's a sign of unawareness how much these small acts mean for our environment. I wish more people took it seriously.

I recycle, and at work we grow vegetables and fruit and we do composting. I also make sure I use reusable straws - I hate the paper ones so metal all the way! I also only buy bamboo cotton buds now and use reusable carrier bags as much as possible.

I recycle and try to buy used items instead of new. In the past I've tried making various "eco-art" projects but I often didn't love the final product. At my college I joined the sustainability club but that was years ago. I want to try upcycling again and a few projects have been on my mind awhile 1) making a t shirt quilt 2) making paper canvas out of scrap paper 3)paper mache projects out of old paper 4)collages 5) upcycled eco art items out of empty cereal boxes and magazines it cute magnets and beads for jewelry making.6)using bottle caps to create a mosaic wall art piece

I buy in bulk when I can to reduce the amount of packaging, use reusable containers/bags for things like taking my lunch to work, use reusable menstrual products, recycle everything I can (including the items that have to be returned to the store, although that gets done infrequently because I tend to forget to take it all with me when I go to the shops ), repair what items I can instead of replacing them, only use reusable bags when I'm shopping (that one's actually super easy - plastic bags are being phased out here so most places either discourage or don't accept them anyway), and have a metal cutlery set in my bag that I can use if I get food while I'm out so I don't have to rely on disposable ones. I did also used to use a reusable coffee cup when I got takeaway drinks, but they stopped allowing that when the pandemic hit due to health concerns and I'm not sure if that's been reversed yet. I know there's probably more I could be doing, but every little bit counts!
