Places to meet LGBT people? -
June 29th 2012, 02:35 PM
Hi there, I was hoping someone could give me ideas here. I wanted to meet and befriend other LGBT people (and hey, a girlfriend would be pretty awesome too ). I live a really small town, and I don't have my intermediate (for those who don't have the Candian system, it means I can't drive without someone who's had a full license for at least 3 years). We don't have a GSA at our school, and there's a few bi people I know of, but that's only one part of the community.
Tried the online thing too, it doesn't have the same feel. Is there any other places I could go?
Thanks,
Rae. xx

What online programs have you tried?
Many people from experience haven't heard about it, but Trevor Space (Click HERE) was a site that I heard about that helps you to find local LGBTQ around your area.
Or maybe try to locate your nearest PFLAG chapter, I know they also have suggestions for you as well as better resources! (

I agree with PFLAG my friends go there. They say it really helps and they have met some really cool people there. Or could you try to start a GSA at your school?

I agree with what others have said. I also bet that if you phoned an LGBT support line (there are a good number of those available) they would have a resource database of organizations and meetings and stuff in your city. Also, check with your school. I just found out that my Uni has a group called "inQueeries" for the LGBT community.

The one thing I have noticed is, around the world, that places like the USA is where LGBT identified people are bullied and discriminated against the most in schools or the workplace or even at home and on the streets. Having observed that, there seems to be a lot of support organisations and charities out there to help the LGBT community.
I've noticed in Australia, my hometown at least, that there is minimum homophobic retaliation in schools and that the general community appears to be more supporting but we have hardly any organisations or places/people to seek help from. The places that do exist are all intercity and there is usually not more than 2 or 3 over a vast area. I was reading some documents by the Government from 2004 and many things were listed and suggested by LGBT youth as services or areas/providers of knowledge and guidance lacked existence in my local area, and 8 years later these services are still no where to be found....
