Unhappy How do I tell my counselor? - September 29th 2012, 12:14 AM

Last year when I was depressed I went to my school counselor a lot. I liked spending time with her and it gave me something to look forward to. I think she thinks that sometimes I only ask her questions so I can go to her office. This year, I'm in her peer leading group and I always pretend to be happy at school. So, she thinks I'm fine now but I'm not. I don't know how to tell her that I still need help and I still need someone to talk to. Please help.

Hello there, Queenkiki3! I think the key to your situation is going to be to keep it simple. The best way to tell your counselor this information is to just tell her. Remember that she's human and can only know as much as you allow her to know.

More than that, it sounds like you may need to find a long term solution to your problem. Talking to your counselor is a great and necessary step, but you should perhaps begin talking to her about a way to help you in a more permanent way. Like anything else, treating the symptoms--sadness or depression--is good for the immediate time, but eventually is time to move on from the "what" and start finding the "why". If there are problems at home or in your past, it may be time to ask your counselor about how to address these issues, such as therapy.

Regardless, I would urge you to not bottle what your feeling and to contact your counselor again as soon as possible. I am sure that she would not want you to feel like you had to wear a mask in front of her--her very job is to help, after all. ^^
