Question Depression coming in waves? 'Soul Searching'? - December 7th 2012, 09:03 AM

I just have 2 questions to ask you guys. I'll be very happy if anyone can relate and give me any advice on these...

So the first one has to do with depression coming in 'waves.' I could be completely fine one month and then bam! depression hits me for like two weeks. Most times it's not that bad but there are times like now where it can hit me pretty hard. So does anyone else experience depression in waves/stages? If so, what do you do when you feel it coming on?

Second question has to do with the fact that I feel like my life doesn't have a direction at the moment. I just cut all ties with my friends so I'm not going out much; I don't even know if what I'm studying at university is what I want to be when I grow up...

So I've been offered a trip to Sierra Leone for 2 months to do some foreign aid in the summer. I think I'm gonna take it just to spend 2 months by myself and hopefully 'rediscover' myself (if that makes sense). Is that a good idea? Has anyone else done a bit of soul searching and has it worked for you?

Any help will be immensely appreciated!

Depression in waves sounds like cyclothymia or at least dysthymia. I'm not suggesting you are that or anything, but it might be worth reading up on. It could also be related to what you're eating- so make sure that you take care of yourself.

Yes, you should go to Sierra Leone. I spent 5 months in west africa, and I know some people who took a trip to Sierra Leone specifically. I don't know if you will find yourself, but the perspective you get will change your life forever.

PM me if you want to talk or advice on living in Africa,, dealing with depression, or anything else- even things like malaria medication.

Hi dear,

I suppose I can relate in some ways. Depression coming on in waves is something that I have been experiencing for a while. Usually it's down to something going off in my life that stresses me out - like exams or family issues. Seeing as you've cut off ties with your friends I'd recommend trying to talk to someone about it. Being alone doesn't exactly make the depression any easier to deal with.

I think the trip is a great idea and it sounds pretty amazing. Two months is nothing and I know a lot of people that have gone on trips like that and come back with a whole new perspective on things. It makes you thankful for the things you have in life. Give it a shot.

Good luck!
