Question Depression Causing Headache? - April 5th 2013, 09:49 PM

Hey guys.

So I've been depressed since the beginning of this year. Fun,right? I've also had a headache/migraine for about a month now. I've been on medication and no one can figure out what is causing it. But I think I do. Is it possible that it's caused by my depression and/or stress from it?

It's really possible that your headaches are coming from depression and stress. Depression often manifests as physical pain, which is ridiculous and makes the entire situation worse.

Sorry I couldn't be there, I was tied to a rocking chair.

Hey

It's definitely possible that the depression is causing the headache or the stress if you have a lot, have u told your depression doctor? and if not i suggest you do, the medication you are on may trigger this side effect.

Hope this helps

Depression can totally cause headaches, along with a whole bunch of other physical symptoms - I find when I'm really depressed I get headaches and frequent upset stomachs.

If you're treating the depression, the headaches should theoretically get less when you start to feel less depressed. If nothing happens, then your doctor needs to look into other possible causes, for example, if you've had a concussion in the last year, sometimes they can cause headaches ages and ages later.

Hi, Ani.

Depression can cause headaches and other physical symptoms as well. As Jess said, if your headaches don't get any better after you start to feel better then you need to see a doctor and explain.

I'm sorry you're dealing with depression, Ani. I'm here if you need someone to talk to. Always remember that things get better, okay?

Stay Strong <3

All right, cool. I figured it was but wasn't sure. I'm not currently on any depression medication or have a depression doctor abs I'm still struggling to find a way to tell my family in the first place, especially what caused the whole thing (I'm bisexual). So that adds stress.

Re: Depression Causing Headache? - April 6th 2013, 02:08 PM

About four weeks ago I was put on a medication called Topiramate which is actually a anticonvulsant medication so is used in patients who have epilepsy but also helps migraines. I must have seen my doctor about 8 times and had been to hospital four times, one of which my doctor sent me urgently because I was also bringing up blood and there was concerns I has a bleed on my brain. Even though I'm on this medication and my headaches are a lot better (at one point it never went and the pain was unbearable) I'm still told that it is probably also tension headaches causes by low mood and insomnia which meant I was also prescribed things like Diazepam and Sleeping tablets as well as strong pain killers. So yes, definitely, it can be cause by depression.

It's so important to recognise and understand that when a person is struggling with their mental health, it can also lead to physical health problems and if you have any worries or concerns then seek medical help for it and also seek help for you mental health too - you don't have to suffer in silence.

Stay fighting,
Jessie.
