Talking I got a goldfish in Kriskindle!! :D - January 1st 2014, 10:43 PM

We did a Secret Santa at work and swapped our presents last night as everyone was working for New Year's.....and I was given a FISH!! I've never had a pet before of any kind so I'm SO excited!! We kept him in the bar all day in a glass bowl where he got lots of attention and I brought him home tonight. His name is Horatio and we are in love.

He had some food last night but there's none at home and I won't be home to feed him again til tomorrow night - is that okay?? Also any other general goldfish advice would be great.

It's taken 23 years but I can finally call myself a pet owner!!

Excuse me a minute, I'm trying to comprehend the horror that is living without pets for 23 years.

Annnd I'm back.

That's really cool! Better than any present I got this year, for sure. I don't really have much in the way of suggestions or advice because fish are really not my forte, but I just wanted to say welcome to the pet owners club and have fun with your new friend!

I have heard one to three small portions of food spread out throughout the day, and to make sure their feeding stays fairly consistent.

It's important not to overfeed them, though, because overfeeding a goldfish can actually kill them. I don't think waiting until tomorrow night will do damage though.

I guess besides that the only advice I have is to make sure the bowl stays clean.

Congratulations on becoming a pet owner!

First off, you're beautiful.
Next, his name is perfect! Horatio, so cute!
Dez is correct: over feeding them can kill them!
Just make sure he gets the attention he needs! (And I'm not worried, I'm sure you'll check on him often!)
Anyways, congratulations on being a proud pet owner!

I love you to the moon and back.

I used to be a fish owner! Goldfish are the most hardiest type of fish.
You can add aquatic plants, you can get them from the petshop - Elodeas are the best although they never stop growing.

You can get aquatic snails, they clean your fish bowl and they also add colour. Snails are goldfishes best friends.

When cleaning, make sure you have a separate bucket and cleaning equipment because any slight trace of chemicals, it can kill your precious goldfish. When cleaning, make sure you have another container that is free of chemicals and soap. Fill it up with the old water and add a bit more clean water. Then put your goldfish in it. When cleaning your bowl, clean with hot water and again no chemicals or soap. Fill it up until there's 6cm from the brim. It's essentials to add Water Ager, which neutralises the water.

Feeding your fish, because there's only one, only 2-4 flakes or grains of fish food. If you are going away for a long period of time. Pet shops do sell Weekends or Holiday self feeding blocks. That helps you to be worry and stress free.

Any questions! PM/VM me anytime. Happy to help.

Congratulations on becoming a pet owner!
I love the name as well lol.
I currently have goldfish and have done since I was little.
Here's a website that you can look at, if you like, to give you some advice on keeping a goldfish. Hope it helps!

Get that fish a bigger house! If you can buy him an aquarium, that'd be awesome. Fish really do better when there are things like filtration units to help out with cleaning.

I've only had dogs as pets, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help.
But congratulations on getting a pet! Horatio is such a cute name. I'm sure you'll take great care of him.

Thanks so much for the replies My friend was getting rid of his tank and his two goldfish and gave the lot to me today - so I'm now the proud owner of THREE goldfish... they're all in a tank that's about a foot by a foot and a half long so I hope that's ok. There's no filter in it though so cleaning it will be a bit of a pain. But they all seem to be getting on ok so far which is the main thing...

Hey there!

First of all congrats on your new friends!

Since you have three fish now the minimum volume that the tank should be is 120 litres but the more space the better. Also, if you can afford to I would really suggest getting a filter to make cleaning easier and filters do have some health benefits for fish as well since they do produce a lot of waste in a short space of time which can cause toxic levels to be reached quickly.

I know fish seem like an easy pet to keep, especially goldfish but they actually do require quite a bit of care. Did you know that goldfish can live for over 10 years if they're given the proper care? Now think about how many people you've known who've had a fish live that long. This is because people see them as an easy pet and don't know the proper requirements for them.

I've not had a fish myself before so don't have any first hand experience of them but I did find this website that seems reliable and gives good advice on the care of goldfish - http://thegoldfishtank.com/goldfish-...e-of-goldfish/

I hope this helps, take care and I hope you and your fish are very happy together
