I don't know what to do. - August 11th 2018, 01:12 PM

We have two cats that we have had for a while, with our dog and our newest addition would be our puppy who is 6 months old. She has figured out how to use stairs down to the basement and our cats are not happy about this. Because they still do not like her. I don't know why but one of our cats is peeing outside the litter box. We scoop the box everyday, so that is not the problem. Do you think it's because the puppy is downstairs in the cats area? And they are still not getting along? We take the puppy back up. Does anyone know how to fix this. Can someone please help me out when you have time. Thank you.

Having animals is cool. You need to take care of animals a lot and regularly.

Hey there,

I think it's definitely possible that your cat is acting this way due to stress, since even if they did get along with the puppy they probably wouldn't want to to be in their area. The easiest solution I can think of would be to just keep the puppy out of the basement. Do you think you could put up some kind of gate at the top of the stairs that the cats could get through (or jump over, if they could do it safely) but the puppy can't? Otherwise you could train the puppy not to go down there, which is entirely possible even in the absence of physical barriers. For example my dog wasn't originally allowed in the bathroom, so we taught her that it was off-limits and she wouldn't go in there even if the door was open. If you could do something similar with your puppy then it might make your cats feel a little safer and more comfortable.

It could also help to have other areas that the cats are allowed but the puppy isn't, so that they have their own space and aren't forced to interact with her all the time. This could be a room the puppy's not allowed in, or even places high up that the puppy can't get at (for example my cats often jump up on tables or cupboards, so sometimes I leave blankets up there for them). The important part is to make sure your cats feel safe and have somewhere they can "escape".

Hopefully this helped a bit, and let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Good luck!

Hi, thank you so much for you're reply and help with this. We bought baby gates a while ago and put them up. We are going to make sure they are always closed so she can't get down. I like what else you are saying and we can try that. Thank you again.
