Exclamation Sick/Hurt Kitty! Please Help! - August 1st 2011, 09:06 PM

Last night my mom's cat scratched my niece in the face, which is very strange for him, and then dismorning we noticed he was acting weired. When we checked we noticed that he felt REALLY hot and one side of his jaw is all swolen. When he tried to eat earlier he acted like he couldn't chew and since then he hasn't tried to eat anything. We're not sure if he hurt his jaw, or if it's sweling for another reason. We'll be taking him to the vet on wensday, but does anyone have any ideas of how we can help him until then?

Poor kitty! Can you give him wet food or other soft foods until then? If his teeth hurt or his jaw is swollen, he might not be able to chew dry food properly.

Sorry I can't be of much help. I hope he gets seen soon. x

My dad's supposed to get it tomorrow. Tonight we're going to just soak dry food in warm water to soften it up a bit. I'm not sure if it'll tast very good to him, but at least it's something.

That sounds like a good idea too. My cat used to like lapping up the water that her food got into which seems kind of gross, but apparently it's tastier than regular water.

We got the idea back when my dog had puppies. We did the same thing to puppy food to wean them onto hard food.

I guess it tastes like flavored water to them. I'm only worried he'll refuse it, because my mother has spoiled him rotten.

If your kitty can't eat hard food, eventually he'll have to eat the soft food. After awhile even spoiled cats stop being so spoiled. If he is feeling really hot, I'd say he's probably got some sort of infection, as opposed to a simple injury. Either way, the vet should be able to help.

Until then, if you want you could try to get some ice on the swelling, it might help with the fever too, though I'm not sure how much your cat will enjoy that. It' worth a shot though, perhaps she will relish the coolness. A rag with cold water run through it works just as well, and might be much less cold than pure ice.

Until then, just try and be gentle with the cat. There's not much to do for pain in an animal unless a vet has helped out. Just make the kitty as comfortable as possible, and try not to bother her, as the pain is probably making her pretty cranky! (Which explains the scratch)

Hope this helps, good luck to the kitty!

Thanks. We had actually been considering putting ice on the swelllig, since it's so bad, but we weren't sure if you could do that to a cat without them freaking out and just making things worse. We haven't had any cats before the ones we have now, so we've made a few mistakes (thinking 'how different can they really be from dogs'?) that have left us rather nervous.

My advice is the same as anyone elses but if she does get worse then take her to an out of hours vet/ emergency vet. We had to go to one after my cat burst her stitches after being neutered.

Hope the kitty is alright x

Thinking about it more, the kitty will probably freak out if you shove ice in her face

So, I'd do what my mom did when I complained that ice was too cold. Either wrap it in a towel to lessen the cold, or like I said before, run a washcloth through cold water, then drain it. Or stick it in the refrigerator? Whatever you can think of to make it cold, but not so cold that your cat will freak out too much.

Could it be an abscess?

Is the kitty okay? Let us know! <3
