Question Silent and deadly. - September 19th 2013, 03:38 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I have been trying to stop my self harming recently but it is so hard to do so. I am a self harm addict of four years and it has been and long and still continuing battle with myself. I told my mom that I stopped self harming a year ago, but I really haven't. It has been getting worse the past couple months and a couple days ago I cut and burned all over one of my arms, and hiding it is easy since it has gotten colder, but I am afraid of people seeing them. I am just to afraid to tell my mother just yet, because everything I want to do on my own, she won't allow, I am trying to beat selfharm on my own, and I am doing so well! But she doesn't think it is good enough. I just need a way to tell her, or maybe ways to help me cope with out self harming. I have tried the butterfly project and things similar to it, and they never worked for me.

Hey Brittany!

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling I understand what you're going through. I think the key is a reward. For example, every week that I didn't cut, I allowed myself to buy two new songs for my iPod. Another option is making a calm down jar and watching glitter fall to the bottom. You could make chains, too. You make paper links and slowly attach them to each other to make one long chain. When you self-harm, you add a white one and then you add a colorful one for everyday that you don't self harm. As for your mom, any step that you take in your recovery is good enough. You could write a note or send her a text if you're not comfortable telling her in person.
