Question... - May 21st 2011, 02:48 PM

I'm depressed but I don't self harm. I know that's not unusual, but can someone be a SHer but not depressed?

First of all I want to say that it's really great you don't self harm. A lot of people who are depressed deal with their emotions in negative ways, such as self harm. Since you don't self harm you obviously have other, healthier, ways of coping, and that's great. To answer your question, there are a lot of different types of people that self harm. Just because you are depressed doesn't mean you self harm, and likewise just because you self harm doesn't mean you are depressed. Every person who self harms has their own reason for it. They may or may not be depressed. But chances are, all of them have some kind of problem they are trying to 'fix' or 'deal with' by cutting.

^ She pretty much nailed that. You don't have to be depressed to self harm, people all do it for different reasons.

No, you don't have to be depressed to engage in self harm. I used to cut for absolutely no reason, I'd be happy. Nothing would be wrong. I was legit happy. But I still wanted to/did because I liked how blood looked, or I just felt like it. But I wasn't depressed.

Amanda got it pretty well.

Re: Question... - May 23rd 2011, 01:34 AM

I had a group of friends who used to SH when they were high or drunk, just because they could. It had nothing to do with being depressed.

^ I agree with her completely.

Just to elaborate, people who self harm and aren't depressed sometimes do it to relieve stress, or they do it cause they think it's "cool" which obviously its not. Like someone else said, people will do it when they're high or drunk just cause they can and they probably don't even feel the pain of it. So no, it does not always correlate with depression.

Honestly, I disagree.
I think self harm and depression go hand in hand.

Not really. Plenty of people that have depression don't self harm. Everyone has a different reason, and it doesn't mean they're depressed. Self harm is sometimes (I say sometimes because I'm not 100% sure that it's mostly) considered a separate "disease." I am living proof that you do not have to be depressed to self harm. A lot of people do it out of anger, which is not the same as being depressed. Not everyone that self harms is diagnosed as depressed, either. Although a lot of self harmers ARE depressed.
