What should I do? - March 23rd 2012, 08:20 PM

Lately I have been feeling alone and have begun to scratch myself with sharp scissors. I'm not even sure if this is classed as self harm because I don't actually draw blood? I usually bury my emotions and hide them behind a fake smile but lately everything seems to have become too much to cope with. Anger and frustration from certain events that happened a few years ago are coming back and new emotions like stress for exams just add to the list. I don't want to take this all out on the people around me so I have started to take it out on myself instead. I don't want to do this but I feel I deserve it and I have no other options.

Hey Georgia

Yes it is Self Harm.
Quote:
"Self-injury, self-inflicted violence, self-injurious behavior or self-mutilation is defined as a deliberate, intentional injury to one’s own body that causes tissue damage or leaves marks for more than a few minutes which is done to cope with an overwhelming or distressing situation."
We often think that if the wounds are not deep, or if there is no blood, then it isn't serious. But this is NOT true. The severity of your wounds has nothing to do with whether the Self Harm that you're doing is serious or not. Any amount of injury that you inflict upon yourself is serious and should not be treated lightly.

To completely stop Self Harming, you first need to deal with the underlying issues. Like you mentioned about certain events that happened. Self Harm is just a coping mechanism, something that we turn to when we are not able to deal with certain events, incidents, issues etc. Once we resolve these issues, we don't feel the need to use Self Harm ever again.

I'd suggest writing down your feelings instead of keeping inside. Expressing yourself in a healthy manner is very important. When you write down things, it helps you to see things more clearly. Also, I'll recommend talking to someone about this. Maybe a school counselor. Someone who can help you and guide you through this. Here is a list of people from whom you can seek help.

Till then, try using these alternatives. Every alternative won't work for you. But the trick is to keep trying till you find one that works.

Feel free to PM/VM me if you need to talk.
Take care and stay strong
