I'm sure out of all the users we have there are some others that are hearing impaired. I know there is a member who is blind. I am not but I do know a lot of sign language

Whatever it is, chances are I've been there.
If I can make it out, you can too.

I am.
I used to have pretty good hearing, but all the concerts I've been to and all the times I've blasted my music added up and now I'm partially deaf in my left ear.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I was born with a perforate eardrum (torn/ruptured) and have undergone three surgeries for it. I'm only hard of hearing for that ear, but I take care and wear earplugs at concerts and can't ever get it wet so I have to wear earplugs in the shower and can't swim/go in a pool. I want to avoid more problems!

Re: ANyone hard of hearing? - June 22nd 2012, 07:04 PM

Yeah, I used to be moderately hard of hearing (60-70 db range) but after getting bad molds for my hearing aid over four years ago (hard ones, rather than the soft ones I've always got from my school which was my only source of hearing aid support from infancy to the age 22) from this lame place caused my hearing to detoriate rapidly to a profound hearing loss (105-119 db). The hearing aids I wore were basically useless and I got implants put in above my ears. Been wearing CI aids for roughly three years now.

I am practically deaf without hearing aids, but I do hear loud noises. Though I don't know if it's my brain imagining it when it occurs, or if I'm actually hearing it. Did that last bit make any sense? lol

I've had tons of infections in my right ear since I swim so much. I had a surgery to clean out the infection in February and as it turns out, the infection (TMI notice) dissolved most of the little bones in my ear that vibrate to transfer the sound.

Love you-- Kayla c:

It makes sense, I know exactly what you mean. I'm also practically deaf without my hearing aids. But I hear to good to be offered CI, so I think you hear less than I do (even if I don't remember numbers of DB).
My doctor once explained why I think that I hear somethings, he said that It's because of my imagination and the vibrations in the air some sounds make...

One thing that I want to ask all of you that have answered yes. Do you think that the fact that you are hard of hearing are a big part of your identity? Or does it not matter for how you think about yourself? I like to discuss things, and one opinion I have that can make my mom crazy is that I don't want to hear again. Is that an opinion you have or am I a bit crazy that think about it like this?

Re: ANyone hard of hearing? - June 23rd 2012, 02:54 AM

I am not personally hearing impaired, but I babysit an 8 year old boy who is and wears hearing aids, I have never ask why he is. And my best friend's 6 year old little brother who is practically my brother just got his hearing aids a few weeks ago! He was born with fewer of those little hairs that detect the vibrations that make sounds, and his hearing will get progressively worst as he gets older. We always face his situation with a positive attitude!

Hearing problems are not as uncommon as you would think, especially with the headphones we all wear! I live in a small town and know quite a few people who are!
