One small question - July 24th 2012, 04:11 PM

I have one small question: Is religion schitzophrenia?

I'm a Christian for how long i can remember, but i am sort of on thin ice with it, because i think schitzophrenia is sort of linked with religion by talking some 'sense' like that devils exisist and all that. So, if you have a awnser, thank you.

Nope.
Quote:
Schizophrenia (/ˌskɪtsɵˈfrɛniə/ or /ˌskɪtsɵˈfrniə/) is a mental disorder characterized by a breakdown of thought processes and by poor emotional responsiveness.[1] It most commonly manifests itself as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking, and it is accompanied by significant social or occupational dysfunction. The onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with a global lifetime prevalence of about 0.3–0.7%.[2] Diagnosis is based on observed behavior and the patient's reported experiences.
- Wikipedia

Just believing in God/devils doesn't mean a mental illness, although some peoples delusions and hallucinations could well involve religion.

Mental illness and religion are two seperate things, just because someone chooses to belive in something while someone else does not doesn't mean that the first person is mentally ill.

Religion isn't schizophrenia and schizophrenia isn't religion. There are some forms of schizophrenia where people come to believe they're on par with Jesus Christ or a god, however, their thought processes have broken down and aren't always lucid. That said, there have been a handful of studies examining whether there's a physiological link between priests or nuns and believing they've had a mystical experience.

Entirely separate things. I don't think I've ever heard/seen/spoken to/been visited by any sort of mystical entity, but I can still be religious.

And by the way, some of us just are on that level, no question about it.

Exactly. Trying to connect religion to mental illness is impossible because of two things.
1. There are many different kinds of mental illnesses.
2. There are many different kinds of religion.

Sometimes people with schizophrenia can have hallucinations and paranoid thoughts or what not connected to God and the devil, etc. but it does not mean that religion is schizophrenia.
My boyfriend is schizophrenic (paranoid) and his hallucinations had nothing to do with religion.
But, he's on meds so you can't even tell he's schizophrenic.
