Self esteem gone - September 22nd 2012, 03:59 PM

I've always struggled with my self esteem, it just seems that everyone finds a good way to put me down. I never get compliments on my appearance whether it's when I'm out with my friends or even online on sites like facebook. No one say's that I look good or pretty unless it's an immediate family member. I think I look ok and dress nicely, heck I'm only 5'2" and fairly tiny too, but no one ever says anything nice about me. The only thing that I get compliments are about my hair at school and sometimes I'm wondering if they're serious about it or not.

This low self esteem affects my life in other ways. I know that I'm a fairly accomplished musician, but I'm quick to put myself down. I know I shouldn't but I only do since people don't tend to believe that I even play an instrument, let alone the drums. I didn't think that it was that unbelievable of a thing to say, especially since I've been playing for 12 years now. It's frustrating, I'm trying to reach out and start my journey to becoming a professional musician, but no one takes me seriously until I play. Even then, sometimes they brush it off as a fluke.

I'm not trying to get attention, but a little compliment every now and then is always nice and I wish I had support in my life about these things. I also wish people would listen and believe me on what I have to say. I know I'm not a bad person or a bad friend, but I wish I had an easier time making them.

I think a lot of people can actually empathise there.

I certainly get a lot of disbelief when I start playing the piano at the standard I should be after learning for close on 6 years...and even then, it's "wow, I could never memorise a piece like that!"..."Ummm...I'm actually sight-reading..."

As far as compliments go, I don't know how many people get "floods" of them unless they're ultra-popular and completely revered by everyone around them.
As far as Sites like Facebook go, I'm guessing you're adding friends as people who you ACTUALLY know...not just random FRs, which can make the difference between 20 likes, and 4 likes.

Just remember that you can do these things, and that you are a good person - what you think is more important than everyone else, and if you know at heart that you're just as good - or even better - than everyone else, then that's what matters.

Skittlify me up...
