Do you think in words? - October 13th 2012, 09:52 PM

I mean, when you're thinking do you kind of talk to yourself in your own head? I always thought this was normal until I brought it up to my sister. She said she thinks in images and conceptually. I can think in images but most of the time I think in words.

I will literally think to myself:

Quote:
Right, I need to do my homework.
I just always thought that was how most people think

I know I'm not completely insane because I'm questioning my own sanity that's normally a pretty good sign.

I do a mix of both... And sometimes my brain feels the need to spell out words, like "the juice is in the r-e-f-r-i-d-g-e-r-a-t-o-r" which is ridiculous. I think it just depends on the person.

I agree that it probably does depend on the person. I'll do that too, think in words. I'll do that a lot, actually, since I think a lot. Most of the time I'll think in words rather than images.

I think in words mostly. Occasionally I'll run past events in my head which I guess would count as images, but mostly I talk to myself.

Everyone is probably different. I know that I think 80% of the time like you (in words).
And even when I think in words, it's 70% in English and 30% in French.

Re: Do you think in words? - October 13th 2012, 10:43 PM

I usually think in words :P I never really thought of it before lame joke, I know but I'm tired and I'm trying to make me laugh.
Anyway, some days it's just like talking to yourself out loud but thinking it instead.
Haha, forgot this, I just remembered a few months ago I used to talk in the book way, like saying "_______________" he said. it was so funny on the bus when I was thinking this way and I was like what the heck?!

Jay.

Interesting question! I've never really thought about that before. =)

I'd say I mostly think in images and sounds. When I think about something that happened or something I need to do later on, I play it out in my head, like a scene from a movie. I guess it would seem weird if I just saw words flashing in my head.

Re: Do you think in words? - October 14th 2012, 05:52 AM

I think in words all the time too. I think in a mixture of languages. English, Dari, Pashto, Urdu (when i talk in urdu the next few minutes i will be thinking in this language, I don't think alot in urdu), and Spanish ( I am still learning it but I will have times when I start thinking in spanish, mostly to practice but sometimes it just pops up in my head.) So my head is a linguistic mess

But most of the time I think in English because it was my first language I learned the others later so I am mostly comfortable with English.

Re: Do you think in words? - October 14th 2012, 10:41 AM

I think my head speaks in mostly words, English and sometimes Hindi. Sometimes there are concepts, but images? I rarely see images, unless it's a memory. I think it's weird for someone to have mostly images and concepts, honestly.

Then again, this may determine learning styles and left-brain right-brain, or something relative to the brain like that. I doubt any of us are insane in this sense.

I hope you're having a spectacular day!

Re: Do you think in words? - October 14th 2012, 06:41 PM

Sorry, now I'm confused. Are you talking about actually SEEING words in your mind when you think about something? Or are you talking about hearing yourself SPEAK words when you think about something? Because I can always "hear" myself speaking words when I think, for lack of a better way to describe it. What I SEE when I think, though, are images (or maybe they're concepts like Incognito said). Like, right now, as I'm typing this message, I'm "hearing" myself speak what I want to say for this message, but I'm "seeing" images, not the literal words I want to type.

Gah, this is worse than some of the psych classes I've taken. I'm probably over-thinking this.

You aren't crazy. Everyone is different, so don't just base it off what your sister said.
I think in words, pictures, and sounds. Like I'll play a song inside my head.
But yeah, I talk inside my head all the time lol.

I try my best to help, but that doesn't always mean I will be helpful.

Hmm, I've never thought of this before...
I always think in words and I hear myself say what I am thinking.
I usually think in English however I have a slight tendency to think in Spanish. My first language is English however I know quite a bit of Spanish.

I think in words. Or as you put it, I talk to myself in my head. All the time.

I thought I was crazy but this thread proved otherwise.

Ő talk to myself all the time in my head, I will have mini conversations with myself in my head, think in pictures and act out little scenarios in my head sometimes really odd and bizzare scenarios in my head. I also often talk to myself out loud and talk to objects! I'd say you're normal
