Ive told - October 28th 2012, 01:16 AM

So I told someone that I have schizophrenia and his response was "wow". Have anyone here told someone that they have a mental illness if so how did it go.

I've only told my parents and my wife (obviously before we get married xD )
And the only real responses I've gotten are if I needed any support or if they needed to do anything for me.
I would never tell anybody else though

Re: Ive told - October 28th 2012, 02:11 AM

My family knows and a few of my close friends knew before they ditched me. (They didn't ditch me because of that though)
I just recently told me new boyfriend and he was very understanding and told me he's going to support me and always try to put a smile on my face. He said he understands more now that I may just be having a bad day and may not be upset with him. He wants to do everything possible to help me. When you reveal this kind of stuff to your friends you find out who are your true friends.

Whatever it is, chances are I've been there.
If I can make it out, you can too.

Well..depends on if you include eating disorders as mental illnesses.
If so, then yes, my parents know, & I've told a few people, one of which just basically ignores the fact that it exists, since she doesn't know what to do, & a couple people told me I was too fat for an ED & quit talking to me.
So I'm voting yes.

Re: Ive told - October 28th 2012, 11:01 AM

When I tell people I have paranoid schizophrenia they look at me, like they're scared.
It doesn't matter how long I've known them, they look at me at a different way.

I don't tell many people, mainly because of I don't want to be looked at in a different way. I've lost many friends because of my eating disorder, and many in my family don't want anything to do with me (my grandma and so on), because I'm ill.

Whenever I'm at the emergency room the nurse and the doctor sometimes become sad.
It's like they're thinking "what a waste of a young girl".

But I understand them.. More than they can imagine.
Because if I could, I would run screaming away from myself.

You're welcome to send me a message.. I feel so alone with my diagnosis schizophrenia.

Re: Ive told - October 29th 2012, 12:05 AM

My mum started to know I was struggling because I was having panic attacks which resulted in me having to talk to her since I was having up to ten a day. She struggles herself with her mental health and I think it was hard for her but she supported me (more so at the beginning of when it started) and took me to my doctor.

Both the teachers that helped me really seemed to understand and didn't treat me any differently. They both helped me a lot and I feel pretty damn lucky to have had their support through my school years.

My nurse and doctor have been supported but when I have been in A&E and on wards for self harm and suicide attempts, I've had a few problems with their attitude towards me.

I hope you manage to talk to someone. You deserve support - don't be on your own. Remember we're always here for you too :-)

I've told one person about my paranoia, the depression I had, but have never told anyone about my moments when I see things which aren't there, nor my PTSD.

Re: Ive told - October 29th 2012, 01:04 AM

I think whoever you told either 1. wasn't sure exactly how to respond, or 2. didn't believe you. It can be surprising to find out a friend has a mental illness, but I don't think he mean to sound as insensitive as he did. Perhaps you should talk to him about it a bit more so that he's more aware of what it is and how it affects you. If he gets a better idea about it, he might come to realize you're still the same person and that you aren't making it up for attention.

And here you are living, despite it all.
