Fed up - May 14th 2017, 07:33 AM

All the time my mum makes comments Oh you have nothing to worry about in life and this really upsets me.

I have serious mental illness and I try to keep it private but she claims I have no problems according to her. I have not spoken to her about it but this really hurts and upsets me.
I try not to tell her about my problems as I don't trust anyone but myself but she causes me lots of outbursts because she causes arguments and I'm always stressed and she can not see it. I hate it when no one understands what other people are going through.

I'm sorry your mum says this to you, because this is not true at all. Not just for you, but for a lot of people around the world. There is not one single person who leads a perfect life, problem-free. I would sit her down and be direct about this, because she needs to hear it. If she actually believes you don't have a problem then that's on her. Problems don't exist just in povetry-ridden countries and countries that violates human rights. Your problems are just as valid as anyone else's and you deserve to be heard.

Hey!

Thank you for coming to us here for some help

I'm sorry you're mum is minimising your emotions and mental health problems. It can be hard when people say things like this. I know for me it makes me feel like I shouldn't be struggling when I have had people say things like "people have it worse that you" or "you have nothing to be distressed about". I want you to know that you have a right to the emotions you feel. It might be helpful for you to validate your emotions to try and help you understand that it is okay to feel how you feel.

I know talking can be hard but do you think it would help if you spoke to your mum and explained how this is making you feel? You will know best because I know nothing about your mum or how she may react or what she will really think about it. I just know sometimes when we have an issue involving other people, it can actually help to involve them and talk to them about how what they are saying/doing is making us feel.

Just remember you can do this and you're not alone, okay? We're rooting for you and we're always here no matter what.

Hope and wishes,
Jessie
