My medicine isn't working? - August 21st 2018, 05:11 PM

I have been taking my medicine faithfully, but my anxiety levels are still high and my moods have been getting out of control lately. I feel more depressed than a week ago and I'm trying to remain positive, but I'm starting to be pessimistic.

I just want to know if this is because my meds are failing to do their job or not. Any ideas on why I'm feeling this way?

Hey,

I want to start out by saying I'm sorry you're going through this! I know it can be rough.

I am just wondering how long you have been taking your medication for? For example, did you just start recently taking it or have you been on it for a while? I'm just asking because if you have only just started taking your medication there is a possibility that they haven't been in your system for long enough.

I know that I'd occasionally need medication adjustments. I'm not on medication anymore due to lack of access to support, but there were times where the dose needed to be increased or my prescriber would put me on a supplemental medication to help get me to where I need to be. I also started out on Zoloft and a supplemental medication and that worked for a while but didn't really give me the desired effect, so I got changed to Effexor and a supplemental, and then later got off the supplemental and was just on the Effexor. So, maybe you need an adjustment or change of medication as well? These adjustments may not be permanent either. For example, I wasn't permanently on the supplemental medication and was able to come off of it and be fine on just the main medication. So, it may be worth it to talk to the person who is prescribing your medication and let them know that you've been feeling this way. That way, if the way you are feeling now becomes a regular issue, they can talk about potentially making adjustments to the dose of medication, add a supplemental medication, change your medication, or do whatever else they may feel is appropriate. If you don't have an upcoming appointment, perhaps you can either call or email your prescriber, just so they know what's going on. That way, if they're concerned they may also be able to push up your appointment so you can see them sooner. If you do need an adjustment, try not to feel ashamed or upset about it! These things happen and you will eventually find the right combinatio of medications. It can take time.

You said you feel more depressed than a week ago and I'm just wondering if anything may have changed that could be triggering this. It's okay if you're not sure, but maybe you can try and note any changes or events that may be impacting your moods and making things a little difficult. For example, I know school is starting for a lot of people, so if you started school maybe it is affecting your moods. That's just an example of course! But, if you can identify triggers you may be able to address them more. But again, if you can't, it's okay!

So basically while you could need an adjustment on your medication, I can't say for sure since I'm not a doctor. Sometimes people do need adjustments or changes so it's definitely possible, but also see if there are any factors in your life that may be causing you to need a change.

I hope this helped some, and that you feel better soon!

Take care,
Dez

I've actually been on my medication for about 3 months now. It seems to have helped, but there has been a sudden change. My dad started to blame me for him going to therapy, and I just literally got done with a relationship (however it was toxic and I didn't catch any deep feelings). Perhaps those could be the reasons I'm feeling this way?

It definitely could be because of those things! Life changes can trigger depression for sure. I’d still keep an eye on it though and if it continues or gets worse I’d tell your prescriber.
Also know none of the things you mentioned are your fault, and if you want support on any of them you’re definitely welcome to ask.
