Is Narcolepsy Psychological? - December 7th 2018, 06:11 PM

I know that narcolepsy can have psychological *effects* on a person, but is it psychological? Iíve tried reading into it and it doesnít seem to be, but recently Iíve gotten back into contact with my mother and she told me that she read deeply into it, and that it was. She HATES being wrong, but think itís something not actually psychically and therefore isnít that severe.

Re: Is Narcolepsy Psychological? - December 7th 2018, 06:57 PM

It's difficult to say.

Personally, I'd say it's more of a physical thing. According to this, a main cause of narcolepsy is a lack of certain chemicals, which suggests a biological condition. That said, it can in some cases be caused by stress which could also suggest a psychological condition.

The World Health Organisation classes narcolepsy under 'sleep-wake disorders' and 'diseases of the nervous system' so it seems to be a bit of a grey area!
