About bipolar and psychiatrists - January 8th 2020, 07:50 PM

Some needed information before I start my vent . I'm 27 years old. I have a bachelors in psychology. Currently in grad school to be a therapist. So saying all that I do know a lot about psychology . I also do my own research and read books and articles on psychology related topics.

So a long time ago when I was 18 and being forced by my mom to see a psychiatrist they said i was bipolar when I knew i wasn't but no one would listen so i was drugged up on powerful drugs i never needed. Then fats forward I took back my life and went off all psychiatric drugs at 22 years old. Life was doing just fine off meds. I went to university in 2015 off meds and did fine. I experienced some bullying and other stressers but other than that i was functioning and fine.

Then like 2016 to present I have been off and on antidepressants. I also take a stimulant only when needed. No manic symptoms NOTHING when taking the antidepressants.

So heres my frustration and rant below

UGH please tell me why every psychiatrist i have ever seen in my life says im manic just because i talk a lot?? UGH ITS FRUSTRATING AS HELLL. Don't they realize there is other reasons for talking a lot and fast UGH . Also are they not hearing me when i talk which would give them other signs that i am NOT bipolar like i tell them i can sleep on a stimulant, i love to sleep, i cant function with out sleeping, i have been functioning in society holding down jobs. I haven't been on any bipolar medication for 6 years and during that 6 years i have been functioning in society. Holding down jobs and graduating from college. Therefore if I truly was bipolar I wouldn't be functioning this well.

It frustrates me sooo much because then i feel i can't be myself when I see one that i have to like make the effort conscientiously think to my self okay don't talk too much.

I do tell them the reason im talking a lot and fast which is nerves, that im lonely and don't have any one to talk to so when i get to talk to some one i talk a lot and fast because i want to get every thing out before the appointment is over with.
So after I say that they just look at me like hmmm. So then that implies they don't believe me. UGHH.

They don't seem to look at other symptoms other than im talking a lot and fast. When there supposed to look at the whole picture and other symptoms than just that to say some one is bipolar. UGH SO FRUSTRATING.
.

I have to really advocate for myself because if I dont then I end up geting bipolar meds instead of the meds i really need.

thank god even though she was skeptical she prescribed me my vyvanse and buspar that she prescribed to me last time

Sorry to hear you've had a bad time with psychiatrists.

I'm wondering if any of the psychiatrists ever mentioned what type of bipolar they think you have? Bipolar is serious and it's understandable that if you've been functioning well without bipolar medication then you wouldn't think you have bipolar at all. But there are also 'milder' versions of bipolar, such as cyclothymia (although we aren't professionals and can't diagnose you so we can't say for sure whether you do have bipolar or cyclothymia), which can often go under recognised.

That said, psychiatrists don't always get it right. I've noticed that you have another thread on ADHD and that you are being prescribed Vyvanse. Unfortunately, sometimes symptoms of bipolar and ADHD can overlap and it can be difficult, even for professionals, to determine whether you have one or the other or even both. Also, since ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder then some psychiatrists, while they may have a lot of knowledge of mental disorders, may not know much about neurodevelopmental disorders.

It's understandable that you would be anxious going to appointments, and you are right that talking fast doesn't always mean bipolar- many people who struggle with feelings of anxiety may talk fast. Perhaps the next time you see a psychiatrist, you can ask for one who specialises in ADHD/neurodevelopmental disorders and see what they think? If you get anxious, you can just write down your symptoms and hand it to the psychiatrist which might help a bit.
