Emetophobia. - July 6th 2010, 01:35 AM

I have this fear of vomiting. I read online that emetophobia means someone avoids vomiting at all costs by eating healthy foods, avoiding social outings, anything that has the chance to make someone vomit. I'm not that type, though, so I don't know if I'm emetophobic. All I know is that I will do anything to keep from vomiting once the nausea begins, including stepping out into the snow with barely any clothing on.

How do I get over this? I've been sick so often and I think I could feel loads better if I would just let myself throw up.

Waitin' for my ruca.

Sup, Courtney. I've been through exactly what you're going through. Twice, as a matter of fact. The first time was about three years ago, and the second time was last year. I know exactly what you mean. It sucked so much. I read a journal I kept today and felt my eyes watering up at how scared I used to be. Really, though. It does get better. I got help from a counselor in both cases, and I'm doing fine now. I haven't thrown up in about 8 years, and, although I'm still afraid, I don't think about it at all anymore. It bugs me to eat anything that isn't from someone whose culinary skills I completely trust, so I don't eat out, and I wash my hands all the time because of it, but honestly, it will get better. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, cuz I could probably answer.

Phobias are irrational fears but it seems for you, you're uncomfortable with being naseous (as everyone is) and try to prevent it from leading to vomiting. That seems normal and rational to me. When people are ill, nobody is looking forward to throwing up, they dread it, they don't want to have it happen so I wouldn't think you have this phobia.
