Should I see a therapist? - November 7th 2010, 04:54 AM

I have been told I should go see a therapist because of the way I think. What do you think?

Why they said this:
-If someone says a positive comment to/about me I think they are lying.
-I can not say one nice thing about myself.
-I am never happy. (mainly because there is nothing to be happy about)

There are others, these are just the key points.
I am looking for opinions...be honest...I got one persons honest opinion and I need yours PLEASE!!!!

P.S. I hope I put this in the right spot, I am sorry if I didn't.

Some say the world will end in fire Some say in ice
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire
But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great And would suffice.

Ultimately, whether or not you feel the need to go to therapy/counseling is your choice.
These all seem like legit reasons to me to go to counseling. Counseling to me means bettering yourself, recovering from anything you are going through, progression, venting, structure, positivity. I know that you can go to counseling even if you just want to vent your frustrations. Judging by all your reasons, I would think that you will benefit from counseling.

Good luck!<3

Agreed with Lyndsee. Also keep in mind, to see a therapist/counselor, you don't have to be mentally ill. You CAN just be a teen/young adult having a hard time.

Whether you should see a therpist is up to you. Going to therapy can be a very rewarding experience, but only if you're willing to put in the work. It sounds like there are some things you would like to work on - such as low self-esteem and low moods - and counselling can really help with that. Counselling can involve changing your negative thought patterns and helping you feel better - so, ask yourself: does that sound like something you'd be interested in?

One of the key things in mental illnesses and in psychotherapy is if what you're experiencing is distressing to you or causing dysfunction in your life. If what you're experiencing has neither, then psychotherapy is going to be restricted unless you have a motivation to change your thinking patterns. I'm assuming that they do cause at least some dysfunction in your life so I would say it would be a legit reason to go. You may not have a diagnosis and if you go to a therapist, don't expect to get one as they're not allowed to give diagnoses. They can give hypotheses to use that account for your behaviour but they cannot diagnose, so if you wish for a diagnosis you need to see a doctor.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

It's up to you. Therapy works well for some people, but not so well for others. If you feel that you want to give it a go, it's completely up to you.
