Question Oppositional Defiant Disorder - December 17th 2010, 11:39 PM

Do you guys think that this is actually a mental illness? To me it sounds like another excuse to put people on meds. Im asking because I have a lot of the "symptoms" but I know the system tries to control me, and I am not letting them. The school counselor thinks I have it and wants to recommend me to a therapist. Personally I think "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" is a load of bullshit. So I want your opinions on this, please.

I believe it is a true disorder. However, I do not think you have it. I think it could be suspected more than is actually true. I don't think it's just another reason to put someone on meds, I don't really think anything is "just a reason"

I think it is a very real disorder, based on my experience in the field and my study of psychology in general as well as casework. The statement I quoted above leads me to believe that your school counselor is likely on the right track, although neither I or he/she is qualified to make a diagnosis from a professional perspective.

I do believe it is a real disorder and your statement shows exactly that.

I believe it is real, and as to your comment about it being an excuse to give out medication. Isn't the main form of treatment for this disorder therapy?

You are correct, medication would usually be used only to treat secondary diagnoses associated with ODD. The main treatment approach for ODD is therapy, what kind of therapy depends on the therapist.

It's real. My younger brother was told by doctors it's likely he has it; and the symptoms are clear. I think the extent of it can vary widely. Medication isn't the primary treatment for it though, therapy is.
If your counselor thinks you have it, maybe it's worth checking out this therapist; just to have it confirmed or disproved by someone better qualified to diagnose you for it.

It sounds legit...
But when I read it, I think here we are again, being suppressed by them.
The government, media, authorities.

It is not the lack of submission to authorities that is really what is being diagnosed although that it what manifests it. It is the beginning of the disregard of the rights and well being of others.

How it is diagnosed will very from society to society. What manifests it in one society might be completely normal in another.
